Meet Chef Q. Latrice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chef Q. Latrice.

Chef Q. Latrice, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Cooking has always been a passion of mine. I started being very creative in the kitchen at the age of 8 or 9 with my first set of recipe cards. It’s probably been in the last maybe ten years where I’ve been INTO it and decided to go ahead and get my credentials about 4 or 5 yrs ago.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No not at all. I was actually a professional dancer (tours, commercial, music videos) for a good number of years before I decided to go all the way into food and beverage. For ME, the dance world was changing and I knew I had to switch my game up and as usual, I always went back to cooking because it was always something that kept me happy and excited about learning something new. I was a bottle girl, a bartender, I was the girl at the door, anything that had to do with clubs I’ve done. It was fun, it was great money but I didn’t LOVE IT. After all of that I held down a regular full-time job some time working graveyard shifts while going to school full time. I enrolled into college/culinary school at 35 yrs old. I don’t know what the heck I was thinking. It was rough. There were a lot of days I woke up and didn’t want to finish, but once again, I hated my job and I knew I had to and I did. I walked across a stage at dang near 40! Lol.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I work by myself and I dabble in a little bit of everything culinary. I wouldn’t even say I specialize in anything in particular because I’m comfortable and confident in every dish or culture of food that I set out to prepare. I like to cook EVERYTHING and recently baking and cake decorating has been soothing for me. There are two things that I get complimented on the most and they are my Crab CraQ MaQ (mac n cheese) and ANY sauce that I make. I have a thing for sauces. Lol. It’s like the next most important thing on the plate after the protein. My proudest moment is most definitely cooking.

Thanksgiving dinner with Rickey Smiley. We met on set of a holiday special he was doing with James Wright Chanel and he was impressed with my work ethic. I’ve given him a couple cooking lessons and we went all out for Thanksgiving.

I think what might set me apart from others is the fact that I’m not this super popular chick that decided they just wanted to cook and I’m not a super popular Instagram chef with a huge following. I do this because I Love It. Of course, I would love to have a lot of celebrity clients but having a lot of celebrity clients isn’t the most important thing for me. I just want people from all walks of life to love my food and feel like ‘before I leave Atlanta, I HAVE to try Lil Chefs Vittles’.

What were you like growing up?
I was an awkward tomboy for a long time. I was a silly, always making up dance routines with my sister and cousins and somewhat a nerd. Honestly, it wasn’t until my first year of high school that I started being girly and came into ME.
