Meet Chyna Nesby of Fierce Love in Jonesboro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chyna Nesby.

Chyna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story starts out a little more unusual than others. When I was a few weeks old, I was left in an abandoned part of a hospital in Augusta, GA. By the grace of God, I was found and placed in a foster home. At eight months old, I was adopted and moved to Decatur. My life itself isn’t a sob story though. I actually had a good life. I didn’t grow up in the best neighborhood but I attended private school and was given every tool I needed to become a well-rounded adult with purpose. The truth is though that I always felt unsure. Not knowing anything about my past-my parents, family, name, birthday, etc.-left me feeling empty and confused. My dad, who was truly my best friend, passed in 1999 and that left me even more confused. That was when I turned to sewing. I asked my mother to buy me a machine and when she did I began making doll clothes. It was an escape for me. I had found my passion. When I graduated high-school, so many people told me why a career in fashion was a joke.

At the time, my cousin was the only one that told me to do what I loved, but I let everyone get in my head and set my machine aside. I attended GA State, majoring in Computer Information Systems. That was short-lived as I ended up having no interest in it and I realized I needed money. So I dropped out and worked full time. In 2012, I lost my job and after a month of applications and interviews, still could not find work. This was when me and a friend came up with Fierce Love. We started by going to thrift stores, purchasing jeans, and cutting them up. We made sales mainly through eBay and locally. In 2013, I decided to start creating my own custom pieces. This expanded to custom gowns in 2016 and has been growing ever since. I have grown my clientele tremendously and am now working towards my dream of owning a bridal boutique. I am engaged to my undeniable soulmate and have a beautiful and brilliant two years old daughter. I’m so grateful for the passion and strength that God gave me. I used to question who I even was and it discouraged me from taking chances. I’ve overcome abandonment issues, social anxiety, and depression. I want my story to inspire people. I want them to understand that you define your life, it doesn’t define you. Once you set your mind to something, add hard work, prayer, and persistence, it’s yours. That is something no person or circumstance can take from you.

Has it been a smooth road?
I briefly touched on a few obstacles in the last question, but my biggest obstacle was myself. Self-doubt and anxiety kept me stagnant for the longest. A lot of people don’t speak on the depression that adopted children suffer from, even when placed in good homes. It’s a constant internal battle to feel worthy of anything. It’s something I know I never felt comfortable talking about because I felt it would seem ungrateful. I suffered in silence and I couldn’t grow until I let go of all of those negative feelings. Another obstacle was just getting everyone to believe in what I had to offer. I would make pieces and expect them to just sell. They didn’t. It wasn’t until I took time to perfect my craft and started really valuing what I was offering myself that I finally started to receive the support and business I had been looking for

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Fierce Love – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am best known for high-quality, custom gowns. I create gowns that make statements. It sounds so cliché but I want every client to feel like a superstar when they put on my pieces. I make sure every garment exudes luxury, inside and out. I specialize in working with all body types. I have studied what silhouettes are flattering for all figures, sizes 0 to 6X. I have had clients that have cried when they tried on their garment because they can never find anything flattering. I develop relationships with my clients so they never feel like it’s just a business transaction. I want them to always feel comfortable and confident. Although gowns are my specialty, I also offer cocktail wear, casual wear, swimsuits, and children’s clothing. I’m actually designing now for my daughter’s custom clothing line named after her, Madison Laurel. I am just proud overall that I never gave up. It was rough…and confusing at times, but I am definitely on the right path and I know the sky’s the limit.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love how diversely beautiful Atlanta is. There are so many different people with different backgrounds and different stories. The street style here is so dope. You know I love that. I love the many opportunities that are nowhere for anyone to thrive too. You can be who you are and do what you love here with no judgment. It’s inspiring. That is why so many people are moving here. That brings me to what I least like, the traffic. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is. You will run into some traffic. For creative people like me, sitting still in traffic is pure torment. Lol. I blast my radio and deal with it though.
