Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Imbert.
Nicole, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As far back as I can remember I have always loved makeup. Growing up I would sit and watch my mother apply her makeup as she got ready for work, but she would not allow me to wear it at all. My true love for makeup started when I went away to college in 2003. I started with filling in my eyebrows and once I mastered that I would move on to the next thing until before I knew it, I was wearing a full face of makeup. I loved the way that makeup made me feel. It’s almost like I can be whoever I want with makeup. There are so many different looks to create! When I graduated college in 2008 I began teaching high school, where I was constantly being asked, “Who does your makeup? Can you do mine?” I hadn’t worked on other people before, but I love a challenge. I began watching YouTube and fell in love. I have learned how to master my skill just from watching YouTube and practice of course. Today I am currently in my 9th year of teaching and have grown so much as an artist. I take makeup clients on the side after school and on the weekends. My dream is to one day be able to stop teaching and pursue makeup full time.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing worth having is easy. I can’t say this makeup journey has been easy and there were definitely times when I wanted to give up, but I stuck with it. I have had a great support system from friends and family. One thing I have learned is that you can’t compare yourself to others. What’s for me is for me and as soon as I began to accept that my business really started to take off.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I recently got engaged (Sept. 10, 2016), so I will be devoting most of my time to planning my wedding! I am very excited and am looking forward to becoming Mrs. Rankins. As far as my makeup business goes, I am looking forward to bettering my craft and possibly being able to one day do makeup full time.
Let’s explore some of the challenges you’ve faced along the way. What was the most difficult part of your career so far?
The hardest time in my life would have to be when my mother passed of breast cancer in 2005. I remember considering dropping out of college because I just wasn’t motivated anymore, but I got through it. God and prayer helped me to get through it and I was able to graduate from Mississippi Valley State in 2007.
Do you ever feel like “Wow, I’ve arrived” or “I’ve made it” or do you feel like the bulk of the story is still unwritten?
I can remember one of my friends telling me thy my talent was good and that if I was serious about doing makeup that I needed to start an Instagram page that is devoted just to makeup. I was hesitant at first, but once I started the page and began to get more followers that eventually led to clients I felt like I had a real talent. Don’t get me wrong I felt like I was good before, but when people are willing to pay for your services it just makes you feel great! I know I have a long way to go before I can say “I made it”, but I’m a long way from where I started.
