Meet The Crown Jewels Dance Team

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Holmes and Michaundra Denson.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The Crown Jewels Dance Team started out as an idea and from there blossomed. We were created with one thought in mind and that was to build sisterhood through the art of majorette style dancing. We did not expect the obstacles we faced however we persevered through it and have become one of the fastest-growing dance teams on and off campus.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Majorette style dancing is most commonly seen at HBCU’s and urban high schools across the country. Unfortunately, we have faced prejudice and discrimination just by doing what we love to do. The school gave us a lot of push back initially, however, since have been more than willing to accommodate us.

Please tell us about Crown Jewels Dance Team.
We are Georgia State University’s first and only majorette style dance team on campus. Many other dance teams on campus disband after a few years however we are still going strong. Not only do we support the athletics department, we also perform community service each semester and hold monthly clothing/food drives to provide to those in need. On campus, we often hold workshops for those interested in learning more about majorette and we hold information seminars each semester to tackle tough topics such as colorism and mental health.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I wouldn’t change a thing about the experiences we have gone through because it not only made us resilient, it makes our success that much greater.
