Meet Cynthia DeBerry Flowers of CollegeForSure

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia DeBerry Flowers.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2008, I was tapped by the Young People’s Department (YPD) of my church, Trinity AME to create and facilitate College Prep Workshops which led to my receiving The Beverly Dixon Award for Extraordinary Service to Youth in 2013. From this initial call to service, I discovered that I had the passion and skill set that are the earmarks to success in the ever-growing field of College Counseling.

True to my calling, I have provided College Counseling services for the non-profit organizations, Elite Gentlemen’s Consortium and Interfaith Outreach Home where I serve as a board member.

I have also worked both in IT for a Fortune 500 Company and in the residential real estate market for several years where I’ve received numerous awards. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Spelman College and a master’s degree in Secondary Education from Mercer University.

While I work with and welcome students from various backgrounds, I have a strong desire to serve high achieving, economically-disadvantaged students and/or first-generation students. Through my guidance in the past 10+ years, I have helped CollegeForSure students to be accepted to some of the finest higher education institutions in the country. Many of these students have been awarded the unprecedented grant and/or merit aid to attend the schools of their choice.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacle is getting parents to understand the role of a College Counselor and how it differs from the role of a Guidance Counselor. Once this obstacle is tackled, the next major roadblock can be helping parents to see why hiring an Independent Education Consultant/College Counselor is a wise investment.

Please tell us about CollegeForSure, LLC.
CollegeForSure, LLC is a full-service College Advising Company. From intake, we seek to gather the information that will lead to selecting the best post-secondary choices for a student’s optimal success in college.

By using such information as academic credentials, athletic and non-athletic extracurricular interests, desired locations, and family and/or high school demographics including financial means, our staff works strategically and holistically to determine the best fit with the best probabilities for acceptance and a successful collegiate career.

I believe that our very hands-on, holistic approach to college advising sets us apart from others.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is playing with my Barbie Dolls. I could literally play for hours!
