Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisha Roberts.
Daisha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in the mecca for Black culture – Atlanta, I always knew that I wanted to do something creative. I always loved fashion and experimented a lot with my looks as a teen. I knew that I wanted to take a little piece of Atlanta with me everywhere that I went and that’s what I aspire to do each and every day in my work. I am often referred to as “The Pop Culture Queen” by those that know me best. I pride myself on having my fingers on the pulse of what’s happening and what’s new. Whether it’s fashion, beauty, music, or lifestyle. I am sure to have a story to tell!
Shortly after graduating from Hampton University, I set out to NYC with big dreams of working in the industry that I always loved. It was there that furthered my passion for live events and lifestyle. I am so grateful that during my time in New York, I was able to foster life-long relationships and experiences that helped to shape and mold the woman I am today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh, how I wish! I have definitely had my share of ups and downs. The process has not been easy, but it has made me who I am today. I still face obstacles and challenges, but I am able to work through them better now that I am older and mature. I am a person that always has my hands in a little of everything. While that can be a good thing, it can also be tiresome as well. I always tell people to stay focused on the end goal and remember why you started – that’s what will push you through.
With venturing into a new industry such as tech – I continuously face challenges on the day-to-day. It’s a whole new world! While I am merging fashion + tech, there are things on the tech side that I am learning, such as specific terms and operations. It has been a great learning experience and I am so happy to be able to do it in the city that I grew up in!
We’d love to hear more about My Little Black Book.
My Little Black Book was born inside of the kitchen in my apartment. It is literally my baby and I can’t wait for it to launch this Fall/Winter. MLBB started as a directory of exciting Black-owned businesses to support and has blossomed into a go-to guide for all things inspiration, brand awareness, and rediscovery. The MLBB app houses over 500 Black-owned brands from fashion to lifestyle. Search by category, bookmark favorite inspo photos and curate your own My Little Black Book. Building Black businesses in the creative community is my top priority and MLBB has pledged to donate 1% of the app purchases to the National Black Arts Foundation based in Atlanta.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I watched my mom closely and loved her style from the way she did her hair to the shoes she wore, I was truly inspired. I thought she was the most glamorous woman ever!
That inspired me so much and ultimately, I wanted to be a mini her. So, I used to try on her heels and wear her lipsticks around the house (if you can’t tell by reading this, I’ve always had a big personality). That is what I think sparked my love and fascination with fashion. For me, it’s always been about the feeling that you get from the outfit that you curated.
I was always the person flipping through fashion magazines, trying to stay up-to-date with the latest trends. I started my magazine collection at 13. I literally studied the masthead, the designers, and of course, the different fashions housed inside of the magazines. I’ve always enjoyed living life out loud and creating joyous and memorable experiences. I think that’s the beauty of this thing called life is that we get to curate moments and share them with those we love the most.
