Today we’d like to introduce you to Felipe Davila Arango.
Felipe, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Colombia and since my childhood, I have always been intrigued by cameras and photography. After moving around the United States I moved to England in 2005. Upon my arrival in London, I attended University to earn a degree in Film and focus in Direction of Photography.
I love to experiment with style and bold use of colour creating unique worlds to form a story told in each photograph. I blend the lines between fashion and costume, drawing inspiration from classical film and street style. I also credit my inspiration to landscapes and the abstract. After working in several photography studios and on film sets, I have decided to work freelance and created my own company.
I now reside in Atlanta and I’m constantly seeking the exploration of moving image and photography. Right now I am starting a talent agency comprised of an eclectic group of talented youth in Atlanta called The Secret Agency.
I’m the director/photographer of www.evolproductions.com
Has it been a smooth road?
It has never been a smooth journey. For instance in London, I had to work 80 hours a week while attending college as a full-time student just to pay for my studies . I had to work in studios for free to earn the trust of the people I admired in the industry. Until today I still make sacrifices in order to work toward realizing my vision. I guess everybody has their own struggles. But at the same time, I still enjoy my struggles because I am working on what I love.
Any predictions for the industry over the next few years?
Technology is changing the photography and media industry. Better cameras at better prices with faster software are becoming available, making it more simple and easier to use for the younger generation. The trend of photography is heading towards creating virtual realities and 3D images with storylines. I guess people will adapt themselves once the new technology appears.
What would you say has been the biggest challenge for you over the course of your career?
My biggest challenge has been making a profitable living from the industry.
Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
Never give up.
