Today we’d like to introduce you to Denesha Chambers.
Denesha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I originally graduated with a bachelors in Business Administration from Florida A&M University. Upon graduation, I worked in retail management for Barnes and Nobles College Bookstores. It was a great company but not as fulfilling work as I wanted.
Eventually, I decided on going into a Community Counseling program at Mercer University in Atlanta because I’ve always been the one that friends wanted advice from and I loved to see others do well. I worked in various areas in the counseling and helping field including college campuses, psychiatric hospital, and crisis call center.
In 2012, I was somewhat in my own state of crisis following the news that my mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and eventually passing in late 2012. That was the kick I needed to really determine what I wanted to do with my life and go for it. In response to my mom’s death, I prepared to leave my stable, moderate paying job to pursue self-employment as a private practice practitioner.
That is when L.I.V.E. In Color Red LLC was established. Inspired, in name and spirit, by my mother, I embarked on a journey of entrepreneurship- something I NEVER saw myself doing. It has been quite a nerve-racking and exhilarating experience, I must say.
I’ve accomplished and done some things I wouldn’t have imagined 5 or 10 years ago, yet, the truth is, I have really only just begun.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road, although more smooth than I anticipated, if that makes sense. 🙂 There are quite a bit of personal challenges I had to overcome in just trying to manage my own grief while building a business. Also, despite obtaining a degree in business, the nature of entrepreneurship is different in many ways.
Therefore, I had a slight learning curve, and by slight I mean I am still on it even almost five years later lol, adapting to the demands of business owning as well as being a solopreneur at this time. In particular, the ebbs and flows of client participation in services in my field were alarming to experience at first.
For example, clients often aggressively seek help around the new year but will feel less inclined to need therapy during summer months generally. That took some getting used to.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the L.I.V.E. In Color Red LLC story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is L.I.V.E In Color Red LLC. “L.I.V.E.” is an acronym for my tagline ‘ Live Inspired, Value Everything’ and it encapsulates my approach on how to personally and professionally manage life challenges. Of course, since my business was inspired by the loss of my mother and how I healed from that the ‘In Color Red’ portion of the business name is also inspired by her life.
Firstly, red was her favorite color. But, also she was a passionate and bold individual, which I believe is appropriate since both of those characteristics are very helpful when faced with adversity. So that’s what I do, in a therapeutic setting, under the guise of a counseling relationship, I walk alongside my clients to empower them through grief, loss, anxiety, depression, and various relationship issues. I am most proud of my company for the fact that it even exists and has sustained itself.
Again, ten years ago, I wouldn’t have imagined that I would be self-employed with a business that has served hundreds of individuals and families; guest appeared in public and on the radio; hosted community events, and sells clothing and literary product.
L.I.V.E. In Color Red LLC is unique in so many ways, but it is set apart by how it promotes more respect and attention be given to the topic of grief and loss. We are taking a subject matter that most want to avoid, understandably so but oftentimes to a detriment, and instead, offer the gentle pushes that facilitate the peace and healing people really want. We’ve only just scratched the surface on how we’re doing that too, so stay tuned!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
In truth, I don’t believe in luck. I believe in timing, connections, and a God-given destiny. Anything that has ever occurred in my life and business is because of those three things. Hope I’m not leaving anything out, but seriously, I’ve had some misfortunes including the life-altering loss of my mom, but each of them had at least one impactful lesson I could use to my benefit I think.
And overall, I have so many reasons to be hopeful, grateful, and empowered that the energy I get from them have assisted me to accomplish what I have to date and will be why I accomplish even more in life and business going forward.
