Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Hurley.
Derrick, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been a comedian for as long as I can remember, but officially Stepped on stage in October 2017 and haven’t stopped since. I started in Chicago at an open mic called The Juke Joynt on Chicago’s Low End. From there, I went on to perform alongside some of Chicago’s funniest comedians, getting booked shows in the city and outlying suburbs.
In April 2019, my family and I packed up and moved to Atlanta. I jumped right into the comedy circuit here, getting familiar with the open mics around the city and meeting comedians I’ve watched on television my whole life. From the mics, I’ve been able to showcase my talent and get booked for shows here in Atlanta. I’m still growing and working hard to make an impact and become a household name one day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The comedy “marathon” has its ups and downs. Some nights you’re better than others but that just means you have to get back to the drawing board and work on your craft. I’ve run into a few bumps by not being widely known. Not being able to get on stage in certain places, reaching out to other comedians with bigger followings to collaborate with no avail. Some nights I’d be waiting to get up on stage and get bumped by more “seasoned” or well-known comedians. You just have to Have tough skin and the mindset to make it. Keep showing your face, and always deliver no matter if there’s 100 people or four people in the crowd.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My 1st credit goes to God who makes all things possible. My number 1 supporter is My wife/manager Adrianna. She’s helped me so much along this journey and she’s played a huge part in my development and growth. Also, I have to give big props to my Boy Billy Diangelo who had enough blind faith in me to take me to my 1st ever open mic, Shamika Finley who was the 1st to let me grace her stage. Billy and Dyon Brooks played a big part in my early development starting out with all the wisdom they gave me. Also, my hometown Harvey family who supports my content, my Chicago comedy family as well as my new Atlanta comedy family that’s brought me in and continues to help me grow.
