Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Brewton.
Destiny, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Originally established in 2016, as an online marketplace for bespoke afro-inspired apparel and accessories, A House Called Hue is now home to a boutique custom patch making company. As a one-woman production team, starting from a string of small one-needle embroidery machines, to now three semi-commercial ten needle machines, A House Called Hue continues to expand and service brands every day. Since making our permanent switch to this business service in October 2018, we have serviced over 200+ brands and orders across the country from our humble home office. Although we are known for our detailed work in iron-on embroidered patches, we occasionally offer other services including custom embroidered apparel, screen printing transfers and concept graphic design. Our goal at A House Called Hue is to help businesses of all sizes elevate their brand in new ways through creative customized products and marketing strategies.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but it has definitely gotten better! Once I found an honest tribe to bounce ideas off of, I then joined many embroidery groups to learn different tricks and trades from other company owners from as far as the Philippines. The most recent challenge I have encountered in my business was unexpectedly having my first child.
During Quarter 4 in 2019, I went into early labor in November and was blessed with a beautiful daughter. If being a black pregnant woman in America wasn’t scary enough, my daughter was premature and we had both had to stay at the hospital for a week while I recovered from extremely high blood pressure, placing a huge damper on my business. Being a black business woman owner, this unexpected change takes a toll on customer retention, service and the ability to bounce back after maternity leave. I had to refund over $1k in sales and shut down, to not only still send out pending orders but recover from unprepared loss of income.
What helped me overcome and position myself into the most rewarding Quarter 1 of 2020 was my innate ability to multitask. Being a female business owner and now mom, I developed new production schedules and strategies that allowed me to not only recover financially but set myself up to scale this year with my daughter and husband in tow. In the first 3 quarters of 2020 I was able to not only quadruple my revenue from last year but also add on machinery to increase productivity.
We’d love to hear more about the business.
A House Called Hue aims to give businesses high-quality, low minimum, access to customized branding. Through this we provide custom embroidered patches and apparel, custom screen printing and small graphic design work. Our position in the customized apparel industry is important because we offer these services to businesses who cannot afford to access them overseas. With our high-quality product and low minimums, we give businesses the ability to leverage, start or scale their products or marketing without at first testing their idea.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Atlanta food! My husband and I are constantly trying knew places and different types of cuisine. This is heavily prominent on the Southside of Atlanta from College Park to Jonesboro. If anything, that I dislike about my city is the traffic, but I think everyone hates the traffic.
