It’s amazing how watching someone you love suffer will put you into a position to serve your purpose! Although I started my natural journey after learning that I had an auto-immune disease, due to the chemicals in my hair relaxer, it wasn’t until my father got sick that I turned my hobby into my business. I’ve always taken care of myself and like my father, I was doing what I was taught from a very young age to keep myself healthy and presentable. The unfortunate reality is we had fallen victim to good old-fashioned marketing. After doing my research, I found out that companies can make certain health claims based on a single ingredient. The rest can be toxic, but they are allowed to make that highlight because it’s included. It hurt my heart because I knew that many, like those in neighborhoods where I grew up, didn’t know this. After experiencing a devasting health scare within my own family, I decided to create products that people can trust. Body By Dodi was birthed at that moment!

When I started Body By Dodi, I knew that I didn’t want to create products like those currently on the market. I made this decision for three reasons: 1. the market is saturated with natural products, 2. I like to support other natural entrepreneurs and 3. I want to change the way the world views natural skincare. I also made a very conscious decision to exclude shea butter from my products. I know that she works for some, but the world needs to know that natural skincare is more than just one ingredient. I create every product based on a vision formulated in my mind because I am self-taught. I spend my time researching and creating, so I always start with the end result in mind first. Meaning, I know how I want my client to feel prior to ever mixing ingredients together. I was once where most people are with their perception of natural products, and the time for change is long overdue.

I started by exclusively selling my all-natural Body Cream and quickly grew the line to include all-natural deodorant, soap, and cocoa butter oils. The response from my client base has been overwhelmingly positive. Some people have even said that my products have changed their lives! Most of my first-time buyers can’t believe what they are feeling! It’s a beautiful blessing to see your vision come to life and impact people so positively.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The process certainly has not been easy. There’s a lot to consider when starting any business, but when you’re creating products, you need inventory! If you don’t have the means, it can be very challenging to provide for your business. I was very surprised by how long it took me to break even because of the startup cost. Once that was taken care of, I had to then face with the fact that I was stepping into a billion-dollar industry and competing with big-name companies! Although fear crept in from time to time, I remained diligent. I attended lots of vending events and connected with so many people to spread to word about the Body By Dodi difference. I knew this would be the right approach to take, considering in most cases, seeing is believing. Those events have been tremendous to the success of my business, and now most of my sales come from word of mouth advertising.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Very early on, I realized that Body By Dodi is a direct reflection of me and integrity is everything to me! Part of my commitment to excellence is that each product is created and tested, by me, for at least three months prior to ever being considered as an offering. Having this expectation has contributed to my success in a major way because I am establishing a trust-based relationship with my clients. They know that when they purchase, they are getting exactly what they expected. There are no gimmicks and I think people appreciate my level of transparency and commitment to excellence.
