Today, we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Amy Jeanette Holland. Amy Jeanette was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Nina Norstrom.
Dr. Holland, thank you so much for joining us today. We’d love for you to bring our readers up to speed – can you introduce yourself and share your story?
Enjoy working with all ages, to help all find peace and happiness. And, I always tell people I was doing mental health work before I even had my M.D. degree and training in Psychiatry, because in high school for peers, I was the person others came to with their stressors and listened and tried to help them and I just continue to serve in this way.
My training includes undergraduate degree in Medical Technology from Wake Forest University. Medical School training was at East Carolina University School of Medicine followed by an intern year at UNC-Chapel Hill Hospitals where I went on for adult psychiatry training and next I moved to Georgia to complete two year Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Training as I wanted to be able to treat all ages.
Along the way, I married and had three sons all born prematurely with extended stays in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units and home on heart monitors…..I add this because it has furthered my education and compassion to help others with infertility, preterm labor and deliveries as well as my greater concern for children born with differences.
Opened my own private practice twenty four years ago and also worked for several years initially for the county mental health center part time serving children, adolescents and adults. I have been blessed to have served many Individuals, families, and couples over the years…and I continue in this busy practice now serving at one small office location in Georgia and by Telehealth to 3 other states: California, North Carolina, and Florida.
Enjoy psychopharmacology and stay up to date by attending conferences from the leading psychiatrists in the world and consider myself to be on the cutting edge of medication treatments in the field. Also, I enjoy psychotherapy a lot with all ages, so I always offer some brief psychotherapy as I don’t see how focusing on just medication can truly treat the whole person. Some ask me if I ever do evaluations and not prescribe medication and the answer is yes….not often as most people are referred to me for medication as they have tried other modalities including therapy, but occasionally I see someone who is self referred and dependent upon symptoms I might not prescribe a medication. Again with my background and training this is one percent of the time by estimate.
My work is my passion and I believe I can help more people which is why I chose to add tele-health services across 4 states: California, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. And, I grew up in rural North Carolina so I am aware access to care is limited in some places. Currently I see patients by Telehealth through doxy.me/dramyholland platform, and in a small office in Georgia —May be expanding to office space in other states I serve in the future, too.
My interests in this field are broad but I have had so many experiences from work at the Emory Autism Center, to Marcus Center where many served with developmental disabilities and I have numerous patients with ADHD and consider this another specialty area of mine. And I enjoy treatment resistant depression and Bipolar disorders, as I like to solve the symptoms like a puzzle for me to find the right medications to bring the joy back in people’s lives. Therefore, I offer all medications and I am offering Spravato, the Ketamine intranasal treatment in my office, as I am committed to getting my patients to feel joy . It brings me great happiness to see these changes for individuals. And, I have had great experience with severe Anxiety cases ranging from Panic Disorder to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and I am thankful to report I have managed some extremely difficult situations where someone had been washing so much, as one example, he couldn’t leave his home and was brought in by family in tears and with the right medications I am happy to report they returned to a joyful functional life and went on to achieve a college degree and are in a career. Dissociative identity Disorder is another interest of mine as I feel there is so much we still don’t know, but I have seen reintegration of individuals and it is amazing to see people become whole and healthy again with that sparkle in their eyes. As for substance abuse, I have seen many cases of substance abuse, and addictions are very difficult to treat be it a substance, an eating disorder, pornography or other addictive type behavior, but I have seen some great recoveries and lives restored. I completed additional training in order to prescribe Buprenorphine when needed.
And I do forensic work and many people ask what does that mean understandably…I help people with custody battles to evaluate so parents can be involved with their children if it is a healthy situation as I think children should have contact with both parents if it is safe and healthy for the child, and I have done evaluation for fitness to parent, “not guilty by reason of insanity” and “incompetency to stand trial evaluations” as well as “competency to write a will, give informed consent to a procedure” I worked in Fulton County Jail System for ten years evaluating and treating inmates part time after hours and on weekends until birth of my last premature child.
Lastly, another great passion of mine is the benefit of Emotional Support Animals to individuals and I not only bring in a therapy dog or cat to my office several times a week, but I do certifications for people for their ESA (Emotional Support Animal) and I have certified cats and dogs for many individuals of all ages from college students to take their ESA in the dorm to someone who lived in a retirement community that wouldn’t allow any pets, yet her ESA had helped this individual so much to cope with losses of spouse, physical health, and her home.
Hopefully this gives one a glimpse of me and what my expertise and professional experiences and education has been for the past thirty years since receiving my M.D. degree and I feel there is so much more to learn about the brain and I enjoy the challenge of learning to help my patients and I am always learning and very open and versed in many holistic and alternative therapies as I don’t think there is a “one size fits all.” And I often say “there but for the grace of God Go I” as we all can experience stressors and everyone has chemical imbalances of one kind or another.
If I can be of help to you, please do reach out and as I tell everyone, I will do my very best to get you restored to your best mental health and I tell parents I will help you get your child back, I can honestly say I have never failed if a patient has stuck it out with me as we tried to find the right combination of chemicals and treatments for them.
It is a true blessing to me to serve in this way and I look forward to reaching more people that need help through tele-Health and I am licensed To practice medicine in four states at this time: California, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida—in order to better serve more people. If I can help you and you reside in one of these 4 states, please call my office at 770-422-1991 to schedule with me. With medical license in all 4 states, I can prescribe medications to anyone residing in 1 of these 4 states as well as offer therapy services, too.

So, as we mentioned to our audience earlier, you were introduced to us by Nina Norstrom and we really admire them and what they’ve built. For folks who might not be as familiar, can you tell them a bit about your experience with Nina.
It was a pure joy to meet Nina at a time when I was adding on more whole wellness programs to my psychiatric practice and a mutual friend introduced us. Nina is a real and very genuine person, a great writer and a devoted individual to helping others that are broken, abused, and down-trodden. Our goals and our missions I find resonate and dovetail together perfectly. I enjoy working with her and serving on her board and hope to help more people heal through our work together.
