Today we’d like to introduce you to Elijah Watts.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Elijah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I moved to Nashville in the summer of 2019 and was apart of the collective “Lil Homies”. During that summer, I had the opportunity to perform on some of Nashville’s well-known underground venues as well as throw our own shows. Since then I have pursued my own solo career as an artist and currently doing that today. I have been featured on a multitude of media platforms, such a DJ Booth, Lyrical Lemonade and Nashville SCENE as well as other blogs, radio stations and other platforms across Nashville and other cities. I just recently released a single entitled “Zoom,” and it is the first single from my upcoming studio album “Boys wear pearls”. When I’m not working on music, I am shooting and modeling for brands all across the country.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been some struggles along the way, whether it be financial, motivational or physical. I think the biggest struggle I’ve had as an artist was the very first wave of the Covid 19 virus. I had everything planned out as far as content for the next couple of months and then coronavirus hits and I had to regroup. None the less the struggle allowed me to see things from a different perspective and enabled me to get used to adapting to change. Since then, I have had the privilege of getting back to shows and performances and had it not been for those struggles, I would not have the ability to be prepared for minor setbacks today.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
If I could describe myself as a brand, I would say that I’m very genuine and out of the box. Whether that be what you hear in the music or what you see visually, it’s all authentic and the things that make me myself are on display in the art. With the subject manner, a lot of times I make songs about fashion or catchphrases or random things that I say and think. Everything is directly paired to my personality and my likeness, not a character or a façade. I would say that I’m known for bringing high energy and a carefree vibe as far as performing and the song compositions is concerned. When it comes to visual and style, I would say that I’m very out of the box with the way I like things to look aesthetically and the way I pair certain things up.
The thing I can say I’m most proud of is the fact that my ideas and aesthetics is able to be digested and translated by the general public. A lot of times, that is hard when you have an individual who is so far left of the spectrum in a world where everything is run by what’s popular and what is trendy, so it’s been amazing to watch people enjoy this blonde black kid who wears totes and bags and dresses like he’s in his 40s grace a stage to talk about dressing like a dad.
The thing that sets me apart from others is the thing that nobody but my close friends really see, which is my work ethic and drive. When I have an idea, I don’t really sit on it for too long, id rather just go after it, try it and if it fails, learn from that and try again with the new information I have. A lot of artists try to calculate and discuss what they would want to do or what they would possibly do, but very few artists actually get up and go do and that is where I feel like I differ from other artists.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It would either be the first time I was featured on Lyrical Lemonade or the show in Huntsville at a couple of weeks ago. The reason for the Lyrical Lemonade I would say because that was the first single that I had put out as an official recording artist in Nashville so for them to pick that up and like it enough to feature it on the outlet was huge for me. It gave me the assurance and the motivation to only go up from that point forward.
And the Huntsville show as crazy because I first tapped into my creative side in Huntsville Al in high school. So to bring everything back and see some of the same people who I used to share those ideas was just so surreal. It also the first show I had done post corona so for the energy and everything to be as high as it was, it was just a crazy moment honestly. and I think about it to this day.
