Today we’d like to introduce you to English Simone Robinson.
English Simone, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I can honestly say, the reason I began doing hair is because one year, my mom ran out of time to do my hair for picture day. Therefore I had to do it myself. So I did the only hairstyle I knew I could (a slick ponytail). After that, I told myself I have to learn how to do my hair so that I can make sure I always look how I want and when I want. As a kid, I always enjoyed doing hair. Like most little girls, I started off slaying my doll’s hair. I would make sure their ends were trimmed and ponytails were intact with the cutest hairballs I had. My parents were very particular about who was allowed to do me and my sister’s hair. With that being said, our Mother was our hairstylist. I use to think my mom was so dope at doing hair. My braids were always cute to me and my scalp was greased to the Gods with the one and only Blue Magic. She was also pretty good with the silk presses. My oldest sister has been a hairstylist since I can remember.
I use to think she was so cool for doing hair. Eventually, I began experimenting on my own hair. Once I started getting compliments, I figured I might as well really try and learn something about hair. At the age of 16, I got my first job working at Atria Hair Studio. I learned so much from the owners. Not only did they teach me about achieving certain hairstyles, they also taught me to be about my business. I was a shampoo assistant for years and periodically, I would get paying clients and that’s when my confidence really began to grow. Years later, I decided to attend Cosmetology School. After completing the program and passing the State Board exam, I became a Licensed Master Cosmetologist.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve always had a hustle mentality, so once I decided that I was going to do hair, I knew I was going to make money. I’ve always said “I AM MY BRAND,” and I’ve always carried myself in that manner. I figured if I kept my hair fly then eventually people would ask “Ouu girl who did your hair ?”, and of course, I would tell them I did my own hair, and that’s how I began building my clientele. My journey was pretty smooth until May 14, 2019. On that day, my life changed forever. I lost the first man I’ve ever loved, the man who molded me into the woman I am, my Daddy Garry “Michi” Robinson. I had never experienced something so traumatic in my life. Honestly, I was so lost after he passed, I didn’t know what it meant or what I was supposed to do next. I just kept thinking about how he used to always tell my siblings and I “One day I’m going to leave this Earth and it’s going to be really sad, but y’all will be alright”. That played in my head over and over because I never thought it would actually happen. I struggled with how to act after he passed because I really just wanted to fall into this dark place and disappear, but my Dad wouldn’t let me. I could still feel his presence telling me to get up. That hustle mentality that I spoke about earlier, I learned from my Dad. He ALWAYS knew how to make money and he ALWAYS did. So after he passed away I knew he wanted me to get back to work. I could hear him saying, “Don’t go broke being sad. I’m alright”. That’s what motivated me to get up and get back to work.
Please tell us about Pretty Little Hair.
Growing up, I dealt with low self-esteem. As I began to express myself with different hairstyles and different colors, I started to not only find myself but I began to love myself. I started saying I wanted to help people feel prettier, and if I can help by just simply styling their hair then that’s what I’m going to do. That’s how I came up with my business name Pretty Little Hair. My main goal is to be a One Stop Shop. I enjoy doing different styles on my clients as it allows me to continue monitoring the health of their hair.
What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was pretty shy, but at the same time, I was spontaneous. I was mainly shy around people I didn’t know. When I was around my family or friends, I loved to wrestle, have tea parties, play with dolls, and reenact Jerry Springer. I’ve always enjoyed laughing and making others laugh.
