Meet Erva Carter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erva Carter.

Erva, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started singing in church when I was a young girl. About six years ago, I began performing at different venues around Houston such as Red Cat Jazz Cafe and Debonair Lounge at Cafe 4212 to get myself out there. After seeing my potential, a great friend (Monica Garden) decided to manage me because she knew I had something going for myself but was aware of how shy I could be when it came to networking. As I continued to perform, my performances improved and I was able to make more and more connections for myself. Monica then introduced me to a producer trio by the name of (Analogue Escape) which included, Mike Hobdy, Russell Guess & Justin Lewis. They asked me what I wanted for myself and gave me a year of “artist development.” At the time, I had a pretty cool mixtape and a dope collaborative record out, but working with these guys, I couldn’t release music for a whole year. Although it drove me crazy because I was ready for everyone to hear my progress, it taught me a lot about the importance of building yourself and setting a solid foundation.

By the fall of 2016, I was ready to release my first song “Magic” and things went up from there! Now as of 2019, I have a complete body of work available on all major music platforms (EP titled: “Transformer”) thanks to some of Houston’s best producers: J8mos, Bruce Bang & Steve from iMix Studios and Mark Drew & Lyle Harrison!

Since moving to Los Angeles a little over a year ago, I’ve performed at different venues such as Dirty Laundry Bar, Mayfair Hotel and The Spot-LA, continuing to be consistent in performance and spread my presence across the Westside. Currently putting together my own event called “Creatives and Credit”, where artists come together to gain knowledge of the importance and value of credit in America as well as an intimate showcase from myself and another local artist! It’s important to me that I not only grab opportunities when they present themselves, but I also know how to create them for myself.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all, I’ve learned that the life of an entrepreneur has its ups and downs and that’s definitely how life can get for me. Some struggles I faced and had to learn to sit with and heal were, being alone without family, overthinking about what the future could hold (desire), and not understanding the value in being in the present moment (grateful). As time goes, you learn that everything is mental, everything starts with the mind first. It’s definitely a journey, not a destination but, I’ve gained a better sense of direction and prioritizing for my mental sake and so even when the problems arise, I handle them with a newfound strength.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of. What sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer/songwriter and I’m often considered a “powerhouse” when I perform on stage. “Powerhouse” is used to specify the strength in tone and nature of a singer and I definitely love to give a strong presence when it’s showtime! I’m most proud of my perseverance, willingness to learn spirit and consistency! What sets me apart from others, I might say my leadership nature and business mindset that drives me to learn the technicality of the music business now, as well as my “Alien Girl” image that will evolve soon to something even more magical!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Visiting my friends and sharing experiences with them! How far ATL is away from California, lol.
