Today we’d like to introduce you to Greta Anderson.
Hi Greta, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey has been an interesting one, like most people. My career began in the corporate research and consulting space in the late 90s, and has evolved from there. And though I had a great corporate career going, I knew early on I was meant to be an entrepreneur. I eventually set out on my own, and had great success in a variety of startups. But in a few years, I had an opportunity to partner with some seasoned business professionals, where I became a co-owner of a manufacturing company. This experience is where I learned lots about really building a business. With that, we went from total startup to a successful (brand and manufacturer) exit (via sale) about 13 years later.
I’m a serial entrepreneur, so I knew that I was going to build another business after that. But I decided that this one would be focused on sports instruction, since sports have played such a pivotal role in my life. I’ve been involved in golf in many ways, but I’d never really given consideration to moving into the professional instruction space. But after having some firsthand experiences that were less than welcoming, and hearing of many instances from others, I began to explore the feasibility of moving in this direction. Fast-forward 10+ years later, and I’m the founder of Dr. Greta Golf + Dr. Greta Coaching. With Dr. Greta Golf, I provide instruction to individuals through private and small group instruction. I’m an LPGA Class A Professional, and I also serve as a Global Educator for the industry as we help educate and credential the world’s golf instructors. Dr. Greta Coaching is a boutique strategy and consulting service for sports professionals and businesses who need support in amplifying their voice and creating sustainable coaching businesses. So, I stay pretty engaged in the business of sport in many ways!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha! No, the road is never smooth in life. I think that’s what makes life interesting, after all. I’ve certainly had some struggles. From less than honorable business partners to sudden economic shifts that turn your business upside down to health challenges, these types of things will happen over the course of a multi decade, entrepreneurial journey. It’s definitely scary at times, but it’s important to learn how to anticipate, navigate and adapt.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Dr. Greta Golf AND Dr. Greta Coaching?
I’m the founder of Dr. Greta Golf + Dr. Greta Coaching. with Dr. Greta Golf, I provide instruction to individuals. When I moved into the golf instruction space, one of the first things I noticed is that a lot of instructors didn’t anticipate the significance of the little things that make the experience more personable and valuable for the client. One of my favorite sayings is, “the delight is in the details”. That is very true from an instructional standpoint, but also from a hospitality standpoint. With this foundation, I’ve been successful in building a highly regarded instruction practice that provides me the opportunities to teach both locally in Atlanta, but also at events and locations all over the world. After being commissioned by the LPGA to craft and lead instruction on the topic of “the business of golf” for their global Teacher Education Program, I realized that I could expand my offerings and add value by combining this knowledge with my research and consulting experience to help other sports instructors looking to build, sustainable, coaching businesses. I absolutely love what I do!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t really believe in luck. Just like good things happen to us in life, bad things happen to us. Those bad things often get defined as the things that we really don’t want, but that happen anyway. As a woman of great faith, I believe that all things work to the good. Sometimes the bad things that happen to me have nothing to do with me. It can be tough to keep the faith, but if we look close enough and stay positive, there’s always something to learn from the good and the bad things that happen to us in both life and business.
