Meet Haoran Chen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haoran Chen.

Hi Haoran, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Before the third year of college, I felt extremely bored with the job I was going to do. My undergraduate major was electronic information, which is often referred to as engineering. I even got the opportunity to work at Huawei. Such a job could provide me with a high salary, but I was afraid of the boring life and did not regret it. At that time, I really came into contact with the film industry, although I had been deeply interested in this industry for a long time because I like to watch movies and yearn for the stories in them. I often wonder what it would be like if I could join this industry and be a part of it. After making up my mind to study abroad, I threw myself into this industry. I also participated in the production of many relevant projects in China, which played a great role in my growth. I also participated in the production of many advertising projects for large companies, which gave me a sense of accomplishment. After systematic and in-depth contact with the film industry, I gradually became myself and made a long film directed by me. Of course, it is still in the post-stage now, and long films always need a longer time for post-production. Now I am a qualified director, producer, and videographer, and I have gained my personal views on many things in the industry. Most of these are brought to me by my overseas study experience and different cultural environment.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
From a person who knows nothing to now, I have experienced a lot. In the beginning, there is no good way to enter the film industry, which is a very serious circle industry, and I do not want to enter. Secondly, the choice between studying film in China and studying film in the United States once troubled me. Although the cost of studying film in the United States is extremely high for overseas students, I chose the latter in the end, not only because the American learning system is more sound, but also for a practitioner who needs creativity, the new experience brought by different culture shock is what I want. In general, the path is not very smooth, you will meet some people who are not the best to work with, but you will have to work on the project because it is already underway, and you will have to compromise on your pet project because of lack of money.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a filmmaker right now, mostly I work as a Director and Dp for different styles of films and commercials, I have Dp for one feature film called Things Greater Than Us which is on posting right now and will release really soon. My most proud project is a commercial for Media which is in Fortune 500 companies. I do think I have a great aesthetic for a frame, I have a strong ability to create a good story, I can operate different cine cameras and also control different light to light the frame I want, my client want.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I do think Cadrage is a good app to help me to get the frame I want before we go to real set, also I have followed a great Dp influencer who is on YouTube called Lewis Potts, also the official aputure account on youtube taught me a lot give me so many different views on creating my own project. As a filmmaker. I often go to different video sites because they have unique advantages in movie resources. For me, watching movies is not only a pastime but also an improvement. Thinking about why the director would design such a plot and consciously paying attention to the excellent lighting ideas in the movie has become something I will do naturally.
