Meet Heather Lasco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Lasco.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Heather. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up my parents never worked traditional 9-5 jobs, and my father had a successful contracting company for 25+ years. I feel like I definitely got the entrepreneur “bug” from my father seeing him work for himself my entire childhood. As a child and into my teen years, I always ventured down different paths of entrepreneurship, whether it was a home dog grooming business or setting up lemonade stands during the summers. After I graduated high school I became interested in learning about health, fitness, and nutrition, which led me down the path of becoming a Registered Dietitian. Studying to become a dietitian combined two of my favorite things food and the science behind nutrition. During my education, I realized that health and nutrition were so much more than what we eat. I began to understand how “dieting” and restrictive “lifestyle changes” could be harmful to our overall mental and physical health. At this time is when I began healing my own relationship with food through Intuitive Eating. Honestly, I mentally thank the founders of this approach every day for not only helping me recover from disordered eating but changing my career trajectory. by leading me to help others create a more peaceful relationship with food and their body. After becoming licensed as a Registered Dietitian nationally and in the state of Georgia, I started my business Practical Nutrition Advice in January of 2019. Since January of 2019, I worked on growing my business while gaining work experience at an eating disorder treatment center here in Atlanta. Working at the treatment center was extremely rewarding, and it gave me an amazing foundation to work with eating disorders in my own private practice. However, in May of this year, I left that position to focus 100% on my own business.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being an entrepreneur definitely has its ups and downs. Especially, when you throw a global pandemic into the mix. For me, this meant moving my private practice from mainly in-person nutrition counseling to 100% virtual sessions. Also with this came financial uncertainty, however, I have noticed that people are still struggling with food maybe even now more than ever before and need the support of a dietitian.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Practical Nutrition Advice – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a Registered Dietitian and owner of Practical Nutrition Advice LLC. My private practice offers nutrition therapy for teens and adults with eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image concerns. I have extensive experience supporting individuals during recovery from anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder. and orthorexia. My practice also supports individuals struggling with other disordered eating habits that are not currently a diagnosable eating disorder. Examples of disordered eating may include yo-yo dieting, chronic dieting, emotional eating, abiding by strict food rules or exercise practices, obsession with food that affects one’s quality of life, and body image issues related to eating and exercise.

I’m passionate about helping others find peace with food and their body. This is why I offer a non-diet approach to health and nutrition through the lens of Health at Every Size (R) and Intuitive Eating paradigms. By using this approach, I empower clients to redefine what health means to them. As well as learning to connect to their body and find a way of eating that enhances health and wellbeing.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now future plans are slightly uncertain. While I love working with clients in-person, I do plan on continuing to offer virtual services for the time being. Virtual sessions have offered my clients convenience, safety, and the ability to be comfortable in their own homes while having difficult conversations around food and their body. COVID-19 has also opened my eyes to a need for lower-cost services. I also see a need for people looking to connect with others that have similar struggles. Going forward, I would love to offer a group nutrition series at a lower cost along with support groups. Until then, I am accepting new virtual clients at this time that are looking to feel confident and calm around food again.
