Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Morrison.
Holly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m the owner of Frutta Bowls Chastain Park. I spent about 15 years working in the private community / commercial real estate space but always had a passion for how our food fuels our bodies and contributes to our overall health and wellness… After a friend passed away from cancer, I decided to eliminate animal products from my diet and became 100% plant-based. I wanted to share with people how simple and delicious a plant-based diet could be, plus, the health benefits are tremendous! After seeing acai bowls on Instagram, I started researching acai bowl concepts and fell in love with the Frutta Bowls family, literally, many of them are family!
Here I am, six months later, our customer base is growing and day after day I meet people that are trying to eat more whole foods or transition to a plant-based diet and I get to share with them the delicious and easy menu items at Frutta! I also am married with two stepsons who keep me busy with basketball games, movies, arcades and making smoothie bowls!!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, gosh, no. The retail space is a challenging business because the hours are long, your business is open from sun up to sun down and you have to trust other people with your baby! Any new venture is hard – everyone has moments of self-doubt, insecurity, exhaustion and I am no different.
Frutta Bowls Chastain Park – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are known for our superfood bowls, specifically: acai, pitaya, and kale. We also serve smoothies, toasts, and kombucha but our superfood bowls are the star of the menu. Being in the Chastain neighborhood is so great because the community has really embraced us and taken us in as their “local” Frutta Bowls and not a franchise. We’ve met the most wonderful people and hear inspiring stories everyday – from cancer survivors that are now plant-based to people who just love the chill vide at Frutta and come to study for the bar or an upcoming personal training test. If you just invest a few minutes in people, they become so much more to you than just a transaction. What I’m told sets us apart is the quality and texture of our acai and our warm store vibe. I am in the store a lot and meet so many of our customers but I also encourage all of our team members to engage with our customers. You never know where you’ll meet your next friend, boss, mentor, celebrity, boyfriend. You name it, it could happen.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Opening a restaurant! It’s truly a tough, tough business. From the build-out and construction, change orders, hiring, getting open. You are truly everything – the janitor, the accountant, the cashier, the trainer, the CEO. You have to wear many hats and switch constantly without warning!
