Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Cannon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Imani. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been singing and writing songs since I was a child. I always used to try and make my friends be in girl groups with me, whether they could sing or not! I spent a lot of time in music and art classes throughout school even though that was never my major. One day I just decided I was more passionate about artistic expression than a regular career. I’m still working out all the kinks but I have a plan and I can only go up from here!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say the biggest challenge is finding your tribe when it comes to the music industry. You really have to put yourself out there and sometimes people take advantage of you. People know that your dreams are important and they sometimes like to put you in a situation where you feel like you have to do whatever they want, no matter how degrading, just because they are helping you. The crazy part is that even if you are paying people for their work they sometimes still expect more out of you. Then they’ll refuse to send you your recorded vocal stems or sessions and you can kind of see where I’m headed with this.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Well it’s not necessarily a business. It’s more of a brand I suppose. I am a singer-songwriter but my strongest point is definitely songwriting. I feel that I am very good at taking a broad emotion or situation and simplifying it into something relatable and catchy! I’m not very known for my music just yet (but I will be!) so on a personal level I feel people know me most for my personality. I am very outgoing and some people think I’m weird or funny but for whatever reason they find this interesting about me. I tend to be a jack of all trades which people like as well.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There have actually been so many people along the way I cannot even lose them all. I always struggled with knowing if I was actually talented or if I just thought I was talented. A lot of people think that means that I am insecure but I look at it more so that I love my music but everyone thinks their music is good and some of them are not as good as they think. So it was more of a creating a consensus rather than a lack of confidence. But there have been so many supporters, from family to coworkers to random people singing outside on my college campus. They have all supported my talent. My mom definitely believed in me the most I’d say, so I really appreciate that she reminded me that my dreams were obtainable. I appreciate everyone else because they helped me discover that I actually do have some talent and it’s not all some fantasy I made up in my head.
