Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Murray.
Imani, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well, I’ve always known I wanted to have my own company and I’ve always had a love for creating. Those are my two true passions. I planned my entire Sweet 16 from picking out the venue to choosing the décor, theme, everything. So, it was only right I combined my two passions into one and created my own thing that could offer event planning services. Fast forward to college – Delaware State University to be exact – I studied Communications and Marketing, with a focus on journalism and public relations. It was then I realized how important it was to be multidimensional and multitalented. After graduating, I worked at a few companies doing PR but I noticed I wasn’t truly fulfilled. Entrepreneurship was calling me, which pushed me to start my own creative agency. And here we are!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course, it hasn’t been smooth but if it was easy everyone would be able to do it, right? When I think of struggles as an entrepreneur, two things come to mind. Being able to build a consistent paying clientele when just starting my business was probably the hardest part. There may be times where I would have to take on projects for a lower than the desired price just to build my portfolio. But when I got my first paying client, it was such a satisfying feeling because it showed someone trusts me and my work enough to bring their vision to life. Another struggle, I would say, is being respected as a young, black female entrepreneur. Some may look at me as inexperienced or not ready to do the work because I’m only 26 but that’s when I have to let my work do the talking.
Leda & Co – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company, Leda & Co. is a full-service creative agency. We specialize in bringing your brand’s vision to life – whether it’s through event production, public relations, social media management and more! We’ve produced all types of events from #LetMeHearYa, a live music series, to conferences targeting millennials to intimate private dinners. Our dedication to our clients and bringing their dreams to reality is a labor of love.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is being genuinely happy while being able to successfully knock out my goals. Yes, having all the money is great – who doesn’t love money? But are you truly happy? And not just on social media but in real life. That’s success to me.
