Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamal Markell.
Hi Jamal, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
So I think it is only best to start from the very beginning April 14, 1997 a Monday morning 2 AM to be exact. My mother went into labor with me at home unexpectedly at this particular time. My father was not home and we had no working phones in the house to call emergency services. My big sister, who was five at the time with a broken arm tried her best to go and get help however was unsuccessful. She came back moments later and ended up having to help my mom deliver me right there on the living room floor from there. Me and my mom sat and waited until sunrise when my father got home for emergency service services. . I wasn’t supposed to make it. My body was so cold. They had to wrap me in aluminum foil to contain the body heat. I had left after some days passed and I progressed. They told my family I would have complications . However, 29 years later, healthy and prosperous here I am. Like many I started off in the church singing at five years old. The microphone was handed to me in the church went up in an uproar at what they heard. It was clear that I had had a gift and most importantly a calling on my life. As I grew older throughout life throughout many ups and downs trials and tribulations, I maintain the hunger of wanting to be an artist in the love of music and the love of being a vocalist. Having my first professional gig in 2014 on a TV show in Jacksonville Florida called bless the Mic that’s where my career really began. From there I’ve had the opportunity of singing behind many top name artist but starting my solo career is what thrilled me most. The 2022. My mother had a stroke and a seizure in a month later my father was murdered. This drove me to move to Atlanta, Georgia city I thought I would never be in. Moving to LA to Georgia that I know would elevate my career on a whole new level. I released my first project Trial and Error and immediately began to garnish a fan base that extends 30+ countries. From there, I was recognized and awarded as R&B artist of the year and influential artist of the year at the Bible awards in 2024.. being awarded open the door for me to have a many opportunities, singing and many spaces in Atlanta, as well as giving me the op opportunity to be a part of the Real LIFE reality network and on Real LIFE & Music seasons, two and three currently streaming . Here I am today preparing to release my next project, which does give insight on my life who I am who I’m becoming.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were many obstacles and challenges that I faced in life, the biggest for me, as a kid was not being able to be raised by my parents unfortunately, other things is consumed their life, but gratefully my grandmother raised me and my seven siblings. However, after some time, some things begin to become a little too stressful for her, and she became very abusive. Unfortunately, there were times you couldn’t recognize me because I was beat to an extent of swelling and bleeding. These situations unfortunately cause me and my siblings so I have to split up going to different foster care homes in Group homes it was very hard, not living and being with my siblings as we usually were which also drove us further apart. Thankfully, as we got older and reconnected, our bonds, have become stronger and becoming stronger every day. One thing that brought us closer together was again in 2022. Our mother had a stroke in his seizure, so it forced us to have to come together and work together and be a unit again shortly after a month later our father was murdered unexpectedly so once again it forced us to have to come together and become a unit which created an even stronger bond for us. Being in charge of my father’s funeral crowning, HIM was probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to experience an encounter in my life. But I did not know how strong I was until I had to utilize the strength. These very complications and obstacles and challenges is what made me who I am today is it has built resilience and built a character that I believe is what helps me be the backbone in so many people’s lives. .
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer, songwriter, musician, author, actor, reality star. Singing and recording music is my life. It is my coping mechanism. It is my outlet outlet. It is my therapy, but it is also how I connect to so many people across the world. I am most proud of being able to create a body of work that people can relate to that people can see themselves and find healing in find growth in. Nothing makes me feel more accomplished than hearing from people from different places tell me how the lyrics they can relate to where they’ve been through the emotions or how my song has helped them through or help them find something out about themselves that better them . This is why Music is one of the biggest factors of my life. What set me apart from others is my willingness, and my ability to never be ashamed of my struggle. But to create from them so that I and others can heal. My unique sound and approach to my music and how I release . There’s no rule book but I promise to be honest as to where I am in my artistic release .
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The advice I have for anyone who is starting out in music or artistry is to be honest in your writing, and be honest in what you are presenting to the listeners. There is no rulebook you don’t have to have $1 million to start. You don’t have to have put in so much money for mixing in mastering for you to release. It does not have to be perfect, but it does need to be honest it needs to be relatable. It needs to be real it needs to captivate in a way that makes people want to come back for more.. don’t wait for the right amount of money you feel like that shit have don’t wait for someone else to offer an opportunity to create your own opportunities.
