Meet Jazmine Jones of My J Nailz in Sandy Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmine Jones.

Jazmine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got my start in the beauty industry at the age of five; my mother owned and operated a full-service salon. She always made sure that Business and education were instilled in me. Around the age of 10, I took a big interest in nails. One day I told my mother “ I think I can do it just let me try.” I did an acrylic nail and of course, it wasn’t perfect but at that moment I think we both knew that I found my niche.

At 15 I attended Josef Phillips Academy where I completed the Nail Technician Program. I received my license at 16 as a gift my parents helped me open my very 1st salon (My J Nails) where I worked after school and on weekends. Therefore I become the youngest licensed professional and salon owner in my hometown of Freeport, Illinois.

A few years later (2007) later I closed up shop to attend Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN where I originally majored in Business. During my junior year(2010) of college, I gave birth to a handsome son. During my transition into motherhood, a lot of my priorities changed like most do. At that time I felt like something was missing so I searched for a job with more flexibility and I entered the healthcare field.

Working 3-12hr shifts allowed me to get back into a salon part time. As I found my passion again I realized that Nails was all I wanted to do. In 2015 I accepted a full-time position at a major hospital corporation which moved my family and I to Atlanta. At the time I hadn’t realized how much entrepreneurship was supported here, so I decided to start small and set out to find a nail salon that would allow me to work one day a week. I was asked to join the Luxe Nail Bar team where I begin to blossom more in my craft.

Honestly, my demand was growing and I was missing opportunities to service clients because of my full-time job. I was being booked in so much in the one day that I decided to add a half day during the week and before I knew it in October of 2017 I turned in my two-week notice. So, blessed to be able to leave and follow my dreams.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I want to be as transparent as possible when answering this question so of course entrepreneurship is not an easy road to travel it comes with a lot of trials and tribulations. During this transition, you find out who’s in your corner and who is not. I would be lying if I said running a business did not get to me mentally, physically, and emotionally.

One of the hardest struggles along the way would be creating a work-life balance, I’m a mother (which is a full-time job) and also in a relationship with another beauty industry professional (Barber) which means I have to allow him time to focus on his business without the kids as well.

My recommendation for anyone that is interested or struggling with being an entrepreneur is to always give it 100% and understand that you will fail but most importantly learn from those failures, invest in your craft, and surround yourself with people that are positive. The only way to go is up remembering YOU GOT THIS!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about My J Nailz – what should we know?
I am a full time Nail Design Architect of My J Nailz located inside of The Nail Salon by Terrance Terry in Sandy Springs where I offer a broad range of high-quality nail education and services: Natural Nail and foot care, Artificial Enhancements (Acrylic & Gel), Detailed Nail Art, and a broad range of one on one and group courses.

Not only am I a nail tech I ensure that all of my clients are educated on the products I use and services being performed. I take pride in continuously expanding my knowledge in this industry and creating new avenues for future and licensed nail technicians.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My first mentor would be my mother she has taught me everything that I needed to know about my craft and the industry itself. Of course my father for being a supporter throughout my entire life.

My significant other Lamel Sr. would have to be my backbone throughout my entire transition to being a fulltime entrepreneur. Biggest cheerleaders would go to my closest friends and family.

My teammate Terrence Terry for pushing me and placing me in an environment to thrive. Lastly, my clients and future clients if it wasn’t for them My J Nailz wouldn’t exist.
