Meet Jennifer Hudson of Fierce Consulting Group in City of South Fulton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Hudson.

Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Brunswick, a little town in southeast Georgia. My passion for entrepreneurship started when I was very young. My parents and grandparents were both small business owners. I watched them learn the ins and outs of business, sometimes making costly mistakes for just not knowing…… I started my first business at eight years old. I made hair bows and sold them to local salons in my area. Even at a young age, I loved being in control of my destiny.

Fast forward, my love for entrepreneurship and nonprofit organizations collided when I began to work in ministry. I found that many small nonprofit organizations had the passion to make a change in the community, but they didn’t have the tools or resources available to them to become impactful.

What happened next bothered me! Oftentimes, these organizations would solicit help. Unfortunately, the help was either too expensive or shady and didn’t deliver on their promises. The result left these organizations worst than they were before: money lost, and time wasted.

In 2003, I became Fierce and organized Fierce Consulting Group; a consulting firm in Atlanta, GA. I started helping small and startup nonprofit organizations become federally recognized (501c3) tax exempt organizations. I wanted to make sure these organizations that were pledging to help others had someone they could trust to help them. My goal was to make the tax-exemption process simple, manageable, and understandable. I’m proud to boast that I have a 100% success rate with the tax exemption process.

Today, my goal is to not only help organizations with their tax-exemptions but to help nonprofit founders and leaders acquire and develop the skills to not only start their nonprofit but to manage their nonprofit effectively. We help nonprofit founders and leaders with program development, board training, establishing policies and procedures, back-end processes, bookkeeping, compliance, and understanding how business works to develop a strategy that will enable them to have a lasting impact on their community. We’ve also expanded to assist for-profit small business owners with the formation process, bookkeeping, and business taxes.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road that is entrepreneurship is never a smooth road. There will always be highs and lows. My biggest struggle as an entrepreneur was saying “NO,” and realizing I could not help everyone. I had to learn to find my niche in the marketplace and serve my target audience in my niche to the best of my ability and not overextend myself by trying to serve everyone.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is working with my grandparents in their shop during summer breaks. I knew I would be able to earn some money. Working with my grandparents, I was able to get a first-hand experience of what business ownership really looked like. I learned young that entrepreneurship could be rewarding, but it required hard work, sacrifices, and dedication.
