Today we’d like to introduce you to Jetaun Davis.
Jetaun, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Like many young adults, I chose my first job out of college based on what opportunities were put in front of me as opposed to looking for opportunities that would speak to my true interests. Interestingly enough I knew at the age of 22 that I felt called to be of service to the world as a life coach and work with young adults trying to figure out what they wanted to do in life. Still, though, I opted to pursue a traditional path: I worked with a staffing agency to get a gig at an internet marketing company and ended up working there for more than eight years!
While it didn’t always feel like it at the time, working for that company was a great training ground for me. It provided an opportunity for me to develop business acumen, learn my strengths and weaknesses, and understand what I liked and didn’t like in a work environment. As I approached my 30th birthday, I felt like it was time for me to make a change and go after my dream of working with young adults.
I’ve also been working in higher education for the past five years where I’ve worked with students in middle school all the way to their mid-twenties. A constant theme I have found, regardless of background or age, is the lack of knowledge about careers that exist beyond traditional paths. This was the inspiration for my launching Journey to Jupiter: Discover the Life You’ll Create, a career podcast for young adults, in April 2019.
Has it been a smooth road?
It most certainly has not been a smooth road. The biggest challenge along my journey as a higher education professional, life coach, and podcast host has been time management. I started training to be a life coach back in 2012 while working for an internet marketing company in Los Angeles. Even though I felt passionate about pursuing a career as a life coach, I was still committed to doing a good job for my employer and didn’t know how to manage my time where I could do both. As what happens with so many of us, I put off my calling for years before deciding to take a pay cut and relocate to the Chicago area to go all-in on the pursuit of my dream.
Six years later, I’m happy to say that the initial pay cut turned out to be easier to manage than I feared. It’s amazing the kind of opportunities that you manifest when you’re taking aligned action toward your goals. Even still, however, time management continues to be an on-going process as l value living a balanced life. I’ve been very thankful to have my own life coach hold me accountable. Yes, that’s right: even coaches need coaches too. 😉
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Journey to Jupiter: Discover the Life You’ll Create – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Journey to Jupiter: Discover the Life You’ll Create is a career podcast for teens and twenty-somethings who are figuring out who they want to be when they grow up. I launched the show in April 2019 to give anyone who has access to the internet an opportunity to learn about various careers they may know nothing about. Since launching, however, listeners have shared with me that hearing our guests’ journeys to the careers they have today has been as helpful as learning about the various jobs they’ve had. The interviews make it clear that the path to dream careers aren’t always as linear as television, society, or our imagination oftentimes make them seem to be. You can check out the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, SoundCloud, or anywhere you listen to podcasts.
In 2020, I’m looking forward to getting out in the community to speak with young adults in the Atlanta area about their career aspirations and offer workshops to help them design their own roadmaps to careers that will allow them to have fun and live a life of adventure – whatever that looks like for them.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about Atlanta is its diversity. It’s a tossed salad with people of all ethnicities and walks of life who bring their cultures to create a vibrant city. There is a place in Atlanta for everyone just like there are careers that are fits for everyone.
What I like the least is the traffic, of course. However, if the traffic is a byproduct of the diversity that I love so much, I’ll take it. Similarly, even the most ideal careers will have aspects that you don’t like. However, if what you don’t like is just a small percentage of the pie, the career is still golden! 😉
