Today we’d like to introduce you to JoAnn Corley.
Thanks for sharing your story with us JoAnn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From an early age, I had visions of and always felt that “being in business” was my destiny. In my early professional years, I was reading INC and other business magazines and had developed a passion for personal development and how that manifested in business.
My early career was centered around insurance which was my entre’ into employee benefits and thus the beginning of a career in human resources. My interest in people and business was beginning to form.
All of this lead to expanding my experience in recruiting and personal-professional development and in 1998 decided to launch my business as a career coach and corporate trainer.
It’s been quite a journey these past years since I hung out my shingle. In the early years, I had no idea the twists and turns the road would offer. Through-out the years, my resolve to serve the human community in the context of business has been an ever-present partner and is stronger than ever.
As a corporate trainer, I’ve delivered thousands of workshops and seminars on a variety of professional development topics. Spoken in every major U.S. city and every state. My travels have taken me from Nova Scotia to Alaska and from Puerto Rico to Hawaii.
The duration and unique experience of travel have exposed me to a variety of employees and leaders, their conditions and concerns. It’s given me a ground floor and c-suite view of a variety of attitudes, philosophies, and practices surrounding how business and government entities run and work with human resources, talent management and development related to organizational success. This scope of experience has shaped a very specific point of view and provided tremendous insight surrounding how to leverage talent to best grow a business.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been smooth. I had some illogical career detours that eventually severed my path, though I couldn’t see it at the time. And there have been scary moments in my business growth. During the 2008 economic downtown turn, business literally dried up.
The Human Sphere – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The name of my company, The Human Sphere, reflects what do. I help company leaders connect the human part of their business to operational success through speaking, consulting and coaching.
I discovered early on leaders tend to be experts in their field, but not necessarily in who they lead. You’ll find very few skilled leaders and managers today because they don’t know how to effectively connect human behavior to getting results. That’s where I come in. I help leaders do that in a way that is easy and even fun! My clients consistently comment on the inspiring energy and passion I bring in working with them!
That approach has helped build a strong brand. Since 2013, I have been named to at least 1 list a year of top HR and/or Management Experts to follow. I was also invited to be a member of the IBM Futurist – Influencer Group. Most recently I was named to the top 50 Unstoppable Women In HR Tech and to the 2017 Top OctoLeader List for branding and marketing. ..and there are some amazing people on that list! It was truly an honor to be named to list outside my industry!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I really have had several proudest moments of my career so far. One was the first time I spoke at SHRM National, the HR industry’s annual national conference. I was slated to speak at two mega sessions….there I was speaking before thousands of my peers. It was thrilling and humbling at the same time.
The second is getting the opportunity to be an ongoing contributing writer for Huffington Post.
And third, being named to the recent OctoLeader List — several of those listed I’ve admired for years! To be named among them is really something.
