Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnathon McKenzie.
Johnathon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started with having an interest in photography in 2011. I started with playing around on Nikons, then got my own Canon camera, a Rebel T3i. I started with the T3i just shooting simplistic things (nature, landscapes, and sometimes people). Then, I didn’t begin to take photography seriously until I got to high school, which is when I began to work on perfecting my craft and creating substantial content. From there, I began to branch out into networking with other brands and stepping into the fashion world. And after spending time working on my craft I’ve now shifted my main focus in photography, my subjects are now primarily: portraits, music and fashion photography.
Has it been a smooth road?
“What a long strange journey it’s been.” The road so far has been a continuous process of non-stop work and continuously striving for ways to make my work more unique.
But this journey hasn’t been all exhausting, there are times when it’s become the most exhilarating and diverse way to experience the world. Thanks to this profession I’ve traveled and visited places both old and new, but I now view these locations through a new lens, with a more proactive mindset and a purpose to constantly create.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the ONESHOTJOHN story. Tell us more about the business.
My business, Oneshotjohn, is specialized in the visual arts: so that ranges from photography and also, includes videos and graphic design. As a whole, my business is mostly known for its photography, as that is my trademarked characteristic. However that is not my only, I’ve created conceptual videos/commercials with various brands and independent individuals within the industry.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next few years my industry I don’t see it changing much, however, I do imagine the industry it growing even more. In the current landscape Hip-Hop/R&B, the fashion world and photography have slowly started to blend into each other over time. In today’s world, many music icons are now known for their ways to dress with designer fashion brands and many photographers now have a majority of their work published/output through online platforms. The focus of many photographers can usually now consist of displaying famous music idols donned in iconic designer brands.
