Meet Jonathan Bonner of Performance Ready Athletics in Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Bonner.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all began when I was training with my brother for my college football career. Throughout the years of my training, he always told me I was going to become a personal trainer one day and I always shrugged it off and said “Nah, I don’t know if I could do it” and so when I left for California to play football at the end of my college career, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life outside of football. Football was all I knew and my degree in marine biology I knew I wouldn’t be happy in that job field. So, I called my brother and asked him what I should do and he told me to come work with his training and in that instance, I knew in my gut that everything was going to be alright. I moved back and started training with him he took me under his wing and showed me the ropes of training and luckily the gym we trained at had older trainers who took me in like a little brother who showed me different training styles. Over that span of a year, I grew tremendously from mentally and physically and showed me life is more than football. I can make money by using my mind and body. From there, I tried to set myself apart from other trainers by trying different workouts and outrageous lifting flexes to show everyone how strong I was. That of course brought a lot of attention and also strangely more clientele. From there, it took off from being featured in men’s health from being but on snapchat workout pages to being reposted all throughout social media and big fitness accounts and even being featured on tv. The brand is still growing and I’m still continuing to push my limits to do better than I did yesterday.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
it hasn’t the life of a personal trainer is rough at first, I would say in most cases my brother ended up helping me for eight months in total helping me get by. I honestly say as an entrepreneur, you have your good months and bad months. I remember I jumped from having 44 clients to seven clients in one month and that was a scary experience because it felt like my life was closing in but you have to take the losses and learn from them so it doesn’t happen again, it definitely pushes you to go out and get it no matter the circumstances.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Performance Ready Athletics – what should we know?
Performance was created by my brother Jonah Amos in 2014 and he’s been training since he was 16 and has been changing people’s lives since then. I came on at the end of 2016 with him and I specialize in weight loss and weight gain personal training. I’m known for being that Trainer that’s going to annoy the crap out of you, but annoy you to better yourself and make this fitness goal into a lifestyle, not just a month or two quick goal. I’m proud to say performance-ready has helped over 1,500 people over the span of 2014 and we still continue to grow and to see how much we make a difference in people’s lives from attitude to physical appearance, it’s something that I could never get tired from. I think what sets me apart from everyone is that I don’t do this for the money or fame, I do this to help others change their life I want to help the world and change it for the positive.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My brother Jonah Amos was a big influence in my life and still is he might be one year older than me but it seems like he has the knowledge and wisdom of a 50-year-old man always helping continue to grow. I would say the group of trainers who took me underneath there wing and showed me business and training Jamar Robinson Darrell Patterson Brandy Outlaw Tony Smith Anthony Brown and I would say my family who supported me to do this journey throughout the whole process.
