Today we’d like to introduce you to Jude Timothy Harris.
Jude, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was young my mother would take me to see plays. I saw very cool productions at places like Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida and Lexington Children’s Theatre in Kentucky. Moments like those sparked my interest in acting. I was definitely the kid running around in my Halloween costumes all year round. Then when we moved to Atlanta, where the film industry is amazing, I saw it as an opportunity to start taking what I was passionate about seriously.
I started out performing in children’s theatre. I then transitioned to film and television. I took classes and became heavily involved with Atlanta Workshop Players. I was going out for auditions and booking roles in independent productions. Then I was introduced to my agent Kathleen Schultz through my mentor Lynn Stallings. Having an agent really helped by getting me in front of bigger casting directors. I came full circle and reconnected with my theatre roots when I earned a spot on the Teen Ensemble team at the prestigious Alliance Theatre.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My acting career at this point is going pretty well. I’m getting a lot of work, both through auditions as well as directors reaching out and offering me roles. I’m good at what I do, but I strive for more.
It wasn’t always easy. In the beginning, I had to hustle a bit, taking as many classes as I could, getting connected in the industry by doing unpaid projects and extra work on major productions. I even created my own talk show and films. I worked hard honing my acting method, finding what worked for me. I’ve still got a ways to go before I get to where I want to be in this business, but I’m very happy with how far I come.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am proud of being an actor and some of the great roles I have been able to play. I’m also proud of my accomplishments, a movie that I created has been accepted into film festivals, winning best cinematography, being nominated for best actor in a movie. The thing that sets me apart from others is that I’m good at more than just acting. I have an eye for things that most actors don’t have to pay attention to, which I believe gives me an advantage.
I’m also very passionate about the art of film making. I like to pay attention to what makes a story good. I love learning everything I can about making films. I am most happy when I’m on a movie set, being on a set excites me because I thrive in that environment.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe luck has influenced my career. Rather, I put myself in positions to be in the right place at the right time. Having a good work ethic, such as being reliable, adaptable, or just being easy to get along with, are important in this industry. Those are choices I’ve made as a person and didn’t come from luck. My mom raised me with her one-word mantra, integrity. I’m not perfect, but as long as I keep my integrity in check, I’m on the right road.
