Meet Katie Crenshaw of Typical Katie in Johns Creek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Crenshaw.

Katie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After a couple of failed marriages (yes, a couple) and a stint in single motherhood, I finally settled down with the love of my life and decided to expand our family. First, we had a daughter: Charlie. When she was born, I decided to stay home and leave the work force. My background was in Healthcare with a focus in Obstetrics, which I loved, but Charlie was high needs and I felt I needed to be home with her.

The one thing I knew I would need to survive stay-at-home-motherhood was an outlet. My long time passions were writing and photography, so starting a blog just felt the best combination to provide fulfillment and catharsis. I decided to be 100% authentic from the jump, and truly create a space of uncensored life-talk. It felt like there was a void in mom-land for mothers who were willing to talk about all the bits, not just the pretty ones.

From there, my blog took off and gained traction quickly. I began contributing to The Huffington Post and Scary Mommy. I had an article about my daughter’s facial birthmark go mega-viral, and continued to grow. My blog has maintained its presence as a raw, real, gritty space where I talk everything motherhood to travel and adventure. I have two Instagram accounts where I connect with my community and I love every second of what I do.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. As with any self-owned business, it’s a lot of work and I wear many hats. The biggest misconception about professional bloggers, I think, is that we are just playing around and getting paid for it. I work harder and have more mental exhaustion from this job than I ever had before. Of course, I love the work I do and it has plenty of perks (the greatest of which being schedule flexibility), but it’s far from smooth. There are many late nights, early morning, and headaches. I struggle with anxiety and sometimes want to go off the grid and detox from the internet. However, at the end of the day, I love what I have created and the people I have been able to help and inspire are worth the hard parts.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Typical Katie – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I operate a Lifestyle Blog called Typical Katie. I talk about all things lifestyle for a woman like me in her thirties; namely, Motherhood, Home and Travel. I have tried to create a community of readers who value authenticity, sarcastic humor and honest conversation as it pertains to womanhood and mom life. I am proud of the stories I am brave enough to tell because it could be what someone else needs to hear. My content is carefully produced to tell a story and I love the audience I’ve captured this way. I think I am different from some other bloggers in the way I voice my journey and document my experiences. I am committed to the real, the raw, and the ridiculous.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We actually left Atlanta for California and came back. Atlanta is like the L.A. of the South. There is a lot of diversity in the city and no shortage of culture. From the food to the attractions, Atlanta is such an interesting and unique city. I would have to say the food and the music scene are my favorite things. I LEAST like the traffic. Is there any other answer?!
