Meet Kayla SiMaya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla SiMaya.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kayla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In pre-k, my teacher at the time taught the class a song. Later that afternoon, my mom came to pick me up and my teacher stopped her and asked “Hey, did you know your daughter can sing?” The beautiful soul my mother is, she instantly laughed and replied “No she can’t!” My teacher started to sing the song and I joined in. My mom was in a shock, but soon after she signed me up for everything music related – piano lessons, vocal lessons, and I started singing in the church choir. And now, at 22, I’m living in Atlanta, with a newly released EP entitled Ginger. The journey has been interesting. In high school, I shied away from pursuing music as a career – I thought I wanted to study Neurocriminology; but after graduating, music was all that I felt I had. I packed my things, left NC and headed to Georgia to pursue music as an R&B artist.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Moving to Georgia might’ve been the biggest challenge. I adapt well, but this was the first time that I took a risk with something that was and is totally dependent upon me and what I put into it; and moving to an area that you know nothing about, I felt a little out of place and very insecure. Along the way, finding trustworthy people to work with was difficult – there was a lot of trial and error when it came to that. And shaking the fear/nerves that come along with performing. I’m proud of the progress that I’ve made, but those as some of the challenges that I faced initially. I’m very grateful to have overcome them.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am an R&B singer-songwriter. My songwriting isn’t limited to R&B, I can write for any genre, but I have a soft spot for Rhythm & Blues. At this moment, I’m most proud of Ginger (my EP). I’ve been working on this 5-track project for a year or so, and it came together so beautifully. When I work on music, it becomes a therapy session for me; and being able to put together a body of music that expresses who I am, my experiences, and even my life lessons is important to my life journey. My music is lyrical and soulful. People listen to R&B to experience a soulful atmosphere, and they listen to Hip-hop for the lyricism and hype. My music brings the two together.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment in my career would have to be the day I uploaded my EP, Ginger, to the distribution website I use. I recorded a video of the audio files loading onto the site and really allowed the moment to soak in. I’ve always been a singer, but this moment signified a very large step towards my dream becoming my reality.
