Today we’d like to introduce you to Kesia Thompson.
Kesia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Unlike most Atlanta hairstylist, I never wanted to do hair nor have I been doing hair since a child. In fact, it wasn’t until I woke up one morning after spending over 15 years in the medical field that the idea of doing hair came to me. Considering that it might have just been a desire to do something different, I continued to do what I’ve always done. It wasn’t until one day I took my daughter to the hair salon for her fifth birthday in November of 2012 was my “first desire to do hair” put to the test. I had previously informed my daughter hairstylist of how tender headed she was, yet as she did my daughter’s hair, my daughter screamed and cried uncontrollably. Unable to bear my child crying any longer, I paid the stylist and decided to finish her hair on my own. After finishing my daughter’s hair, I was complimented on my work and often asked whether or not I had a business card. Taking this as a sign from the universe that I should take a leap of faith, I quit my job and enrolled into Empire Beauty School in 2013. I’ve have been addicted to hair since.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In everything, there are hardships. Some days are easier than others. Nevertheless, there are hard days. However, I am thankful that my transition from the medical field to the salon chair wasn’t anything outside the norm. As far as I can recall, I’ve only experienced two hurdles since I’ve started my journey in the hair industry. One of the problems that I’ve faced was building my clientele. This was extremely difficult for me because people are often fearful of trying a new stylist. The other hurdle that I’ve experienced is trying to maintain a fully staffed salon. Nevertheless, I have overcome both by constantly networking/broadcasting my work and being grateful for the amazing team that I have.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the PinkIce Salon story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a hairstylist that specializes in natural hair and extensions and I’m known for promoting healthy hair care. As a salon owner, I am proud of maintaining a successful salon since 2013 and starting my very own product line “PinkIce Luxury Extension & Hair Care”.
I try to make sure that every client is satisfied with everything/my work before leaving the salon. Customer service and satisfaction is a major factor in my work.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t say I have good luck but with God and the Universe on my side, how can I fail? I’m a firm believer that the universe is always listening. Once you change your mindset, you can change your world.
