Today we’d like to introduce you to Khalia S. Preyer.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Khalia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m Khalia S. Parker Preyer, also known as “K(P)2” pronounced KP Squared. I am an actress, educator, creative writer, and a children’s book author. Theatre and creative writing is my hobby and career choice. I was introduced to theatre in high school via a strong Drama Club and have been living through it ever since. I am the Founder and Cheif Executive Officer of K(P)2 Theatre Foundation, Inc. My favorite pass time is writing, and through this, I’ve birthed a few plays, a lot of poems, and three children’s books. My book Love Beyond the Bars gives assurance to both parents and children that there is life beyond the uncomfortable experience of parental incarceration. It’s based on a true story, my story, of unconditionally loving a parent who’s been incarcerated since I was four years old. I wrote the story to serve as a resource to my sons who are growing to love an incarcerated grandparent. Now, I teach writers how to self publish, and create culturally relevant literature through the arts.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, I’ve been writing forever. It’s my way of escaping, of coping and sometimes even explaining. Previously, I would say one of my obstacles was that I would write things I’ll never say. Yet, now after getting to know who I am and what I stand for, I am the challenge. I grew beyond barriers, and I believe I can help others do the same. There are issues plaguing our society and I wholeheartedly believe that we can fix them with a dose of love, two scoops of the arts, and culturally relevant books and material.
We’d love to hear more about K(P)2 Theatre and K(P)2 Writes.
K(P)2 Theatre has a mission of providing culturally relevant theatre to children and youth. We provide workshops and camps, help with building literacy skills, and create performance opportunities that go beyond the school curriculum. Theatre is a mirror of life, and our story is authentic. We believe in the power of the arts to mesmerize, challenge, and improve the world. We appreciate the opportunity to make a positive impact on our community through our love of the arts.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I remember going to the park with my father before he went away to prison. Yes, I remember the monkey bars, as discussed in my book, Love Beyond the Bars. However, I especially remember the sense of protection, love, imagination, and the beauty of innocence. Things change when you are finally able to reach your barriers. Things like age, family, friends, everything changes. Yet, true love is timeless and unconditional.
