Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Faulkner.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
A long, long time ago, I owned a sweet shop and tea room appropriately called Aunt Laura’s Sweet Shop & Tea Room. After several years in business, the economy started to decline and as a specialty shop, we were hit hard and had to close. I went on to do other things (get my Master’s in Teaching, get married, and have a baby)! When our daughter started Kindergarten, I found myself a stay at home mom who needed something to do. I decided to pick up in the baking business where I left off but this time focusing on custom, decorated cookies. At Aunt Laura’s Cookies, our motto is simple, we spread joy and happiness one cookie at a time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes and no. I was a little rusty when it came to decorating cookies as I hadn’t done so since 2008 when our shop closed. So for the first few months, I focused on the basics of cookie decorating. Once I felt comfortable with my designs, I started providing samples to our daughter’s school and doctor’s offices and that has paid off. I’m a firm believer that handing out samples will yield new business. My late father was a salesman (he could sell ice to an Eskimo) and he would take clients donuts to win them over. I guess I inherited that mind set.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a one woman shop working out of my home. I specialize in custom decorated cookies for every occasion. At Aunt Laura’s Cookies, I believe that every cookie tells a story and I want to help tell yours.
I hear it all the time, our cookies not only look beautiful but taste amazing! I’m proud of that, and when I see the smiles on my clients faces when they pick up their cookies, I know I’m in the right business.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
When I’m not in the kitchen decorating cookies, you’ll find me at one of the many after school activities our daughter is involved in (I’m a dance mom, a karate mom, and a swim mom). My husband and I have been happily married for 10 years and even though we have only one child (our miracle daughter), it’s quite noisy at our house with the addition of our 2 dogs (a Boston Terrier mix and a mini schnauzer)! I am also very involved in our church both teaching Sunday School and helping with our kids worship hour. So when you have a chance, stop by our website (www.auntlaurascookies.com) and let us help you tell your story.
