Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Alleyne.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started making jewelry in 2012 when a friend suggested I try it just for fun. I immediately fell in love with the jewelry making process and realized there was no limit to my creativity. The best part was being able to make pieces that perfectly matched my outfits! I soon began getting a lot of compliments on my pieces and decided to turn it into a small business. I first started selling on Etsy, then in Fall 2015 I landed my first boutique account. So far, my jewelry has been sold in seven boutiques in Atlanta, as well as Los Angeles. I also built my own website www.LaurenAlleyneJewelry.com which serves customers worldwide.
Has it been a smooth road?
The most difficult part of running a jewelry business is trying to balance the creative process and the business aspect of it. As a designer, all I want to do is create, but in order to be successful I have to wear many hats. I do all of the marketing, photoshoots, jewelry shows, and advertising, as well as making the jewelry. Needless to say, I have many late nights! Another challenge in the beginning was really defining my style, which has definitely evolved over the years. At first, I was just creating anything and everything, but in order to be a recognizable brand, I realized I needed to have a signature style.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I make bold, chic, and eclectic statement pieces for the sophisticated, fashion-forward woman. My jewelry is for the woman who is not afraid to stand out, because when you wear my pieces, you won’t go unnoticed! I want women to know that statement jewelry doesn’t have to be intimidating, that’s why I use streamlined design patterns and colors that can work with your everyday look.
A lot of my business comes from custom orders. People come to me when they want something special made to go with a certain outfit they have in mind, or if they have a friend or family member who likes one-of-a kind jewelry pieces. I walk my clients through the design process to make sure everything is absolutely perfect.
I can honestly say I’m the most proud of myself for taking the leap to start this business, and never giving up. I love the response I get from happy customers saying that I provided them with exactly what they were looking for.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is a wonderful place to start a business! We have such an eclectic mix of people here, and there are a ton of networking events and social groups available to meet new people and share business ideas. I think once you define your purpose and your goal, it is much easier to connect with the people whom your business can serve the best.
