Meet Lawrenceville Photographer & Graphic Designer: Alexandra Marrero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Marrero.

Alexandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a Puerto Rican artist who fell in love with photography and graphic design more than 10 years ago and decided to move to Atlanta, GA to further my career by finishing my Masters Degree in Photography and who loves a highly stylized imagery and digital artwork.

Has it been a smooth road?
Most of my artistic and photography skill set from before I started my Masters Degree was self-taught, and that requires a ton of research, reading, asking, and lots and lots of practice. Yet, it’s always extremely gratifying to have others enjoy the finished result, so all the hard work is definitely worth it.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
One of my proudest moments was being able to show my artwork at my own solo exhibition a couple of years ago. The show was titled, Ethereality, and it showed 10 of my digital pieces depicting, in a surrealistic way, the emotional effects loss can have on us.

Were there moments when you had to struggle?
I think artists of all kinds constantly struggle in one way or another giving birth and sharing our work with others. I am no different. As an artist, and a commercial photographer and graphic designer, I constantly struggle with finding a balance between self-expression and client satisfaction. I like to believe that I am successful in finding that balance most of the time… but still, struggle with how to better myself from the times that I don’t. Artistry is a journey, not a destination.

What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
I think Atlanta is a great place for photographers, graphic designers, and artists of all kinds. There are plenty of venues for self-expression and many career-enhancing opportunities for those focused on a commercial approach.
