Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Taylor and Dontay Hampton.
Logan and Dontay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In the Summer of 2015, we had a lot of shootings in 1 week somewhere between 10-20 that is massive compared to major cities like Chicago, New York, Miami, Houston, etc. I told my girlfriend at the time (now wife) while on family vacation that I wanted to give back to the community in some type of form or fashion and she asked me a few questions pertaining to why, what, how will I do it, etc.
I explained to her why, what, and how I wanted to do it and she then asked me what was I going to name it we were at the light right before I hotel and I sat there for about 2-3 mins thinking before a car behind honked the horn and it bought me out of my thought process and told April (wife) I will name it Y.B.Normal?. So Y.B.Normal? has been up and running for three years now. When I 1st started, I was cheated out of money and lied to for some people they would I have quit after the 1st problem but I said I wouldn’t stop for nothing nobody supported us so we started from the bottom and just kept grinding. We started going into schools and speaking for free in September/October 2015 and we did that for almost two years straight.
January 2016, we saved up enough money to become official an organization and we continued to work for free. In 2017, things started to change for us we started to shoot motivational videos and we gave over 70 pair of shoes to the less fortunate and we started doing community outreach once a month in our city. We start making a little noise with the community outreach and videos towards the end of 2017 going into 2018 we came up with a curriculum development program geared toward social and emotional learning in the fall of 2018 we started with one school, went into the 2nd semester of school we went from 1 to 3 schools.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The journey has not been smooth at all. When we first started, no one would give us an opportunity. We had individuals be dishonest and not honor their agreements. People didn’t value us as speakers and would not pay us for speaking engagements or any of our services. They wanted a huge discount(free) basically but honor someone from outside of the city. We had someone work for us and quit on us without any notice or anything but still was using our brand platform for self-gain.
Please tell us about Y.B.Normal?.
YBNormal? helps economically disadvantaged youth through empowerment speaking, curriculum development, community outreach, and mentoring & life coaching. We travel around the country speaking to various schools, universities, and sales teams. In fact, we have motivational videos all over YouTube as well a segment called Logical Thinking.
