Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Rainey.
Marissa, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got started doing hair back in college. Once I hit college and I was no longer visiting the salon with my mom, I realized quickly I had no clue how to do my hair. My best friend, Jasmine, showed me the basics of making a wig. Over the years, YouTube taught me the rest. For the past decade, I have been making wigs for myself. It was only two years ago when people repeatedly asked me to make wigs for them. I never imagined myself being in the hair industry. I started making 1-2 for others and then it caught on. I realized that I had great sales skills and people skills to create a successful business. So, in August of 2019, I officially created RaineyWigs LLC. Since then, I have made numerous wigs for repeat customers, celebrity artists, and models. I’ve attended hair classes, trained with top hairstylists, and perfected the sewing machine method.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest obstacle I’ve faced is discouragement. There are so many hairstylists worldwide that have been doing hair longer than I have. I sometimes would get stuck on Instagram and think, “wow, her curls look so much better than mine.” There’s a constant fear of “what if I’m not good enough.” And I’ve put a lot of money into my company. So thinking of all that being a waste is scary.
Tell us more about the business.
RaineyWigs is all things wigs. We specialize in sewing machine stitched lace wigs. There are a variety of wigs, textures, and colors to choose from. Everything from jet black wigs to full rainbow holographic colored wigs. What I am most proud of are the goals I set out and how many I have accomplished. I’ve done so much of my own promoting and grunt work, and now I am finally being recognized. I’ve been to Jamaica and a girl recognized me and told me she loved my wigs. What sets me apart is that I care. No customer is just a dollar sign. I go above and beyond in terms of customer service. I have conversations with clients. Sometimes, I learn their whole life story, all while helping them select the right wig. I pride myself on being able to provide a personal touch to my customers.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, I plan to be solely working on my business. I will have sewing machine classes worldwide. And hope to have gone on 1-2 tours as a celebrity wig stylist. I could also see my daughter setting up her part of the company while in school and building off of the company.
