Meet Midtown Concierge Hairstylist: Charisse Martin-Curet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charisse Martin-Curet.

Charisse, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2012 I got fired from the first salon I ever worked at in Atlanta. That was two days after launching my brand YemesiROUGE. I moved to Atlanta from California to broaden my horizons and experience what was known as the “Hair Mecca” of the U.S. After being fired for launching my own brand, I decided to change my business from behind the chair to the comfort of my clients’ home. I made myself available to them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at anytime they needed me. It changed the way they viewed salon services and the care a hairstylist can have for the individual. There’s no more waiting, no more sharing appointments, no more leaving the house. One referral led to another, now I travel to my clients locally and out of state.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t, but anything you work hard for doesn’t always come easy. I had to first deal with gaining a whole new set of clientele. I put out countless advertisements on craigslist just to get at least one booking. I had to go out and meet new people as often as I could, even if I didn’t want to, just to network. Even after becoming more established, there are moments where clients will cancel appointments and not reschedule for a while so I miss out on money I budgeted into my week. I would have to compensate that loss with a new client if anyone is looking for an appointment. I did, however, find other outlets in doing editorial work that’s been published in magazines as well as working behind the scenes of fashions events. It’s tough, but so worth it.

What were you like growing up?
I was always the independent child. Always out and about to the point where I’m surprised my mom even recognized me when I came home! Much like I am today, I’ve always been the outgoing yet laid back type. Extremely adventurous and a huge risk-taker like climbing tall fences, climbing the roofs of the jungle gym and running around like I was one of the boys. I’ve made plenty of eclectic friends and was eager to learn about the different cultures each one of them had to offer. I rarely ever said no to trying new things either. I’ve always been a well-rounded open-minded individual. The type of education I wanted was much deeper than the one offered in a textbook.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
I can recall my childhood best friend and I wanted to go rollerblading around the neighborhood. However, this one day it was pouring down with rain. You would think a rainy day like this one would hinder any child from even thinking about stepping foot outside, but not us. We geared up with our heavy raincoats, threw on our blades and took off. We ended up circling around the neighborhood basketball court in front of my apartment and had the best time in the world! We were so careless and free that nothing mattered. Not the weather, not the threats of illness, not even potential injuries. We just wanted to have fun and the rain was not going to stop us.

What are your plans for the future?
Ultimately, I want to become an educator. I have a gift and I would not serve my purpose if I didn’t share it with other people. I look forward to traveling the world as an elite Master Cosmetologist sharing my talents from behind the chair to behind the scenes. Because coloring is one of my specialties and a huge part of my notoriety, I will be creating my own color line and becoming a platform artist at trade shows to make my product available to all professionals!
