Meet Jay Mula

Today we would like to introduce you to Jay Mula “The Playlist King.”

Jay got his start in music by burning mix CD’s of all the latest music and selling them to his high school classmates for $10 apiece. He & his friends would also throw house parties where he would serve as the DJ. Along with his passion for hip hop, Jay was a three-sport athlete participating on the Varsity Football, Basketball, and Track & Field team. Although he had a deep love for music at an early age, his plan was always to play Division I college football and then go to the NFL. He went on to become a member of The University Cincinnati Division I Men’s Football Team. Jay played two years at Cincinnati, where he contributed the team winning the American Athletic Conference Championship during the 2014-15 season.

Although he was having success on the field & in the classroom, he decided to transfer to Ohio University to finish his academic & athletic career. Due to NCAA transfer rules, he would have to miss his Junior season. This led to him doing a lot of self-reflection on where his life was going & what his next move was going to be. Winter of 2016, Jay decided to tap back into his other first love of music & founded playlist channel & hip-hop blog “mulatvhiphop.”

From the very start, he knew he had something special after doing research & realizing playlist & streaming would soon be one of the most important elements in the next era of music. Jay Graduated spring 2017 & was set on his new life dream of becoming the most recognized hip hop playlist curator in the music & entertainment industry.

Summer 2017, he posted a video of himself on Instagram, shouting out Atlanta legend 2 Chainz new album “Pretty Girls Like Trap Music” & was given the opportunity to guest curate his Spotify playlist which was shared to 2 Chainz 3 Million+ followers! Summer 2018, Jay decided to relocate to his dream city of Atlanta to pursue his career further.

His plan before moving was to get a job working at Nike and move up the ranks for his favorite brand. He also had his sights set on making connections & building relationships in the music & entertainment industry. Beginning of 2019, Jay gained company-wide recognition at Nike by curating the store soundtrack for the 1st ever Nike x SNKRS pop up shop. He also curated the music for the Nike x “Studio of Dreams” Super Bowl LIII Event Hosted by CamKirkStudios. January 2020, Jay was given the opportunity to create digital content with QC / Motown Records for the roll-out of Lil Baby’s sophomore album “My Turn.”

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has NOT been a smooth road! The biggest struggles I’ve faced are a distance from my family, financial stability, lack of support from friends, and more than anything else getting people to see the value in the content I’m putting out!

On my journey, I have missed a lot of important moments with my family. Not living in the same city as them can be challenging because I do not have the luxury to pull up & be at every gathering. Appreciate my my family very much though because they understand why I am making the sacrifice to live in a bigger city, so they respect that I am hustling to make connections & level up. Financially I have struggled because I refuse to settle for a 9-5 corporate job to help fund my brand. Working at Nike, I don’t make a lot of money, but that’s another sacrifice I’m choosing to make because my job allows me to have access to so many opportunities & connections within the company. I rather take the risk now to get to my long term goals.

Lack of support from friends & people seeing the value in my content has been rough because when you’re putting new ideas into the world, the worst feeling is people not getting excited about it & openly supporting you. I have learned to overcome this by realizing that most of the support will come from people you DONT KNOW & your biggest haters will be people you’ve KNOWN your entire life. I know my brand brings value so I can’t stop until people see my vision.

Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
mulatvhiphop is the home of the HOTTEST hip-hop playlists in the streets! I refer to myself as the “The Playlist King” and My slogan is, “If you ain’t heard a MULATV playlist, you sleep!” I specialize in putting together a different playlists featuring songs & artists that are genuine to my story, but also will connect to other creatives & entrepreneurs who are on the come up & fighting for success just like myself! I am most known for curating the store playlist for the 1st ever Nike x SNKRS pop up shop. My most recognized playlist is #MotivationMonday, Hoop Dreamz, & Trap Drake, & Jumpman Mixtape series.

What I am most proud of as a company was the opportunity to collaborate with 2 Chainz on his “Pretty Girls Like Trap Music” Spotify Playlist. What sets me apart from other curators is I’m putting people onto music I genuinely listen too & enjoy myself! I’m not going off analytics or what somebody else told me is “hot”. Any music I promote or put on a playlist, I’m bumping it on the daily!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck, but I do believe in blessings & God’s grace! Both have played a HUGE role because a lot of the time when I’ve had my back against the wall, a blessing would come out of nowhere & that would motivate me to get through whatever I was battling at the time. I come from a family who prays a lot so I can always feel God’s grace protecting me from a lot of wicked things in the world.
