Meet Nishera Williams of HairByShera in Duluth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nishera Williams.

Nishera, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up my mother couldn’t afford to get our hair done professionally and she didn’t know much about hair herself. So I decided to save my weekly allowance and go to the beauty supply store so I could practice on my sister and I. Surprisingly, I was better than expected. I attended the University of South Alabama the following year, and that’s when my journey really began. I can recall doing hair out my dorm room for $25. I gained a lot of experience so I’m forever grateful for those clients to help me find my passion. I was able to do an apprenticeship while I was in college so I became a licensed natural hair stylist and weaver. I continued to do hair in Mobile, Alabama for seven years and had an amazing clientele before I decided to move to Atlanta a year ago. I took a leap of faith and started completely over to grow my business and name in a new state and here I am today. So to say this journey building my brand, HairByShera, has been great yet challenging but well worth it would be an understatement.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It most definitely hasn’t been a smooth road lol. A couple of months after moving here, I regretted moving in the first place. I went from doing over seven clients a day to maybe 1-2 clients per week. It was a struggle. I almost gave up and wanted to move back to Alabama multiple times but my husband motivated me to keep going. I knew I was a good stylist but never in a million years did I think It would take almost ten months for my clientele to finally pick up, but it did.

HairByShera – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
HairByShera is my brand and I specialize in weaves, natural and relaxed hair, braids, color, and more. I’m more of a visual stylist. If a client shows me a picture of a style that I’ve never done before, I can achieve it. I’m most proud for always staying consistent with my work and venturing off into another state and having a steady clientele in Alabama and Georgia. I think actually loving and treating healthy hair sets me apart from a lot of stylists. A lot of people these days do hair for the quick money but don’t actually take care of the client’s hair first. I want all of my current and future clients to know that caring for their natural or relaxed will always be my main priority.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is having a happy and steady clientele. A great income plays a part as well but that will come if you’re sure to please your clients and always give great customer service. One thing I’ve learned in this business is that recommendations go a long way. If you make a client extremely happy and comfortable, they will tell everyone they know about you. My criteria for success is staying focused, looking for ways I can always improve my business, and always holding myself accountable.
