Meet Paula Campbell of Camp Rebelwood in Buckhead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Campbell.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a singer/songwriter. I started in Baltimore, Md, where I was born and raised. Singing has always been my passion and being a product of the inner city and some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Baltimore music was my outlet and what drew people to me. I didn’t grow up with a tight-knit family so the people who noticed my talent were my motivation to keep going. At the age of 11, a well-known talent agent in the area nick-named me “Sparkles” after Irene Cara’s character in the 1970’s movie “Sparkle.” Fast forward, I went on to win many local competitions and by age 15, I was calling A&R reps, singing on their voicemails, hoping they would call me back. I’d get their numbers from CD inserts of my favorite artist and simply take a chance. I never got anything solid but the belief in myself never died.

I put out my first song “How Does it Feel” independently with a local DJ “Rod Lee” and a record Rep “Greg Baker.” My song became the #1 song in Baltimore, DC, and Virginia for eight weeks straight the summer of 2004. I then went on to sign a deal with Sony/Columbia records where I recorded the award-winning “Hard Out Here For A Pimp’ with mega rap group “Three 6 Mafia.” As Columbia records began to build a new regime, my project fell to the waste side and I was no longer a priority. I then signed to Mega Star “Neyo” Compound records where I learned so much about artistry, humility, unity and the importance of seizing the moment. I released The Glamour Magazine award-winning “Ain’t Nobody Stupid” which still wasn’t enough to get my project off the ground. With my lack of business understanding at that time, I decided that going back to the independent route was what was best for me.

I released several independent singles and gained mediocre exposure. Without a job and no income outside of my savings which was almost depleted, I decided I needed a break. During my break from music, I moved in with a friend for nine months. It was during those nine months that I wrote a 20 chapter memoir “Relentless Resilience.” That story still hasn’t been published but based on that book, I completed my screenplay titled “She won’t Tell.” That screenplay is now being shopped and sought after by a few major companies.

November of 2018, I released my single “Good Without You,” on my own record label, Camp Rebelwood Ent. That record is being played internationally and growing. I also work for high profile cooperation where I am in a position of leadership and have the leeway to spend time working on my passion and goals, make money and also help others. It’s such a blessing because I get to do what I love for myself and also do work that is so much bigger than me. 2019 has already proven that it will take Paula Campbell and Camp Rebelwood to heights higher than I could have imagined. At the end of the day, gratitude for what God has blessed me with already is the biggest elevation factor I have ever experienced. I don’t think it gets any better.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It absolutely hasn’t been a smooth road. Some of my greatest strategies was being able to take a step back and breath. I had to learn that everyone that started with me wasn’t always supposed to take the next step with me. I also learned how to properly vet people and learn what they can truly add to my company/artistry. Also, honest content. People love fads but what they love even more is authenticity. It may take me a bit longer than some, but my base is solid because it was developed with something real.

Please tell us about Camp Rebelwood.
My business is Camp Rebelwood Ent. We specialize in musical artist, however, we also work with authors and screenplay writers, but we are known for music! I’m most proud that my company was has staying power. Even in the moments where we aren’t necessarily winning, we keep pushing to be a mainstay in our industry. That’s what sets us apart from most self-funded independent labels.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over knowing what I know now, and only if I started with the knowledge that I have now I would have built a solid team from the beginning and not just kept people around because I didn’t want to hurt their feelings. I would have taken on the responsibility of being a real boss and not have limited myself by allowing known liabilities to have a position in my company.
