Meet Philicia Gandy of Stylesbyphi in Duluth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Philicia Gandy.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Philicia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I remember when I was younger, I always wanted baby dolls that had hair so that I could play in the dolls hair. At the age of 12, I made up my mind that I wanted to be a hairstylist. I actually started practicing when I was in high school doing things like roller sets, flat ironing, and ect. In those days wearing weave wasn’t popular. I was so inspired by having healthy hair and telling my friends how healthy hair should be. After I graduated high school, I ended up going to a community college name Mississippi Gulf Coast Community in Gautier, Mississippi, which the major I studied has nothing to do with hair lol!! At the time my mind shifted and I wasn’t ready to go to hair school, until one day I was sitting in class halfway through my 3rd semester in college…saying to myself what are you doing in here this is boring and this is something I do not want to do! I called my best friend Breanna Martin up and told her I’m going to hair school!!! I withdrew from that school and enrolled my self into Cris beauty college in Gulfport, Ms! I was so excited to start school! My support system at that time was pretty big and still is on the coast which is where I’m from Pascagoula, Ms. I learned so much about myself while in school, it helped me grow and I looked at life completely different which was a good thing! After I graduated hair school, I said I was moving back to Georgia, which I did four years later, I am licensed in Mississippi and Georgia as a Master Cosmetologist! I travel to my home town once a month to do hair I have so many loyal clients there and I really appreciate them for all of the support since my journey! My clientele in Georgia is growing and I am thankful for that! I specialize in healthy hair care first that is so important to me!!! I offer protective install services such as Sew-ins, QuickWeave, and crochets!! I absolutely love doing hair; it makes me happy! I have dreams and goals that I will meet. I am always thanking God that I have this talent and being able to grow and learn! It’s a blessing being able to make people feel good and in a comfort zone while doing their hair. StylesByPhi will hopefully travel around the world Educating others and of course, doing what I love!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At the beginning of my career, I started to get discouraged because the salons that I chose to work in the environment were negative and I didn’t want to be “ salon hopping “ within the first year I had worked into three salons and that was a lot to me! I just couldn’t adapt to any of the atmospheres. I realized it wasn’t as easy as I imagined. I was being used and mistreated by salon owners. That simply didn’t care and didn’t give me better opportunities.

Stylesbyphi – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Stylesbyphi is my brand I started while in hair school. I specialize in healthy hair. First, I do a lot of silk press and hair cuts! I also do sew-ins, quick weaves, crochet styles, hair coloring. I’m known for silk presses and hair cutting! Lol actually bobs was the style that really got my name out there lol everyone loves my bobs and wanted a bob by phi. I’m most proud of helping others grow around me everything that I have learned over time it makes me happy knowing when other people notice my skills and want to learn them also! I honestly think what sets me apart from others is that I will make you realize how important your hair is first before the weaves and other styles not including your natural hair care. Many think that weave define who they are and I genuinely care so much about your real hair first!!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Giving back!!
