Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Dempsey.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always loved photography. I just never imagined that I would actually go into the business. I was a single mother of 3 small children and constantly looking for the next opportunity to have their pictures taken, unfortunately every time I did my stress level was through the roof. Having someone telling 3 kids under 3 to look at the camera and smile was just not gonna happen, I love the candid moments when you put small children in front of a camera. The giggles, the glares and the moments when they don’t know you’re there. So I took a little break in spending the money on pictures and saved for my first camera. (Thank goodness for EBAY) Once I got my camera I started training myself on everything there is to know about photography. I just wanted to learn enough to capture my own children in the beginning but as I began to post the photos I kept getting the question, “who is doing your kids pictures?” Next thing I knew I was being asked constantly to photograph different families. From the time I purchased my camera it was only 6 months and I had decided to take it on full time and start my own company. This was an extremely tough decision to make as I was my families only source of Income. As a struggling single Mother and now a Small time Business Owner I knew I had to get up every day and improve on my craft to provide a better future for my kids. Looking back now I would have to say that was the single best decision I have made in my Life!
Has it been a smooth road?
My biggest struggle was learning to balance my life as a single mother of 3 small children and build a business. As a novice Photographer with no set income it was terrifying!! Needless to say there were a lot of Ramen noodle nights in my household. Now that we have a full staff and I am a Mother of 5 children, life never seems to slow down. As my business grows so has my family. My Husband and I have our hands full so that makes running a full time business a challenge, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. They are often my little models when I need to try out a new set.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
