Today we’d like to introduce you to Rakeya Morrow.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Rakeya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am an Analyst and a Principal Trainer working in Healthcare Information Technology. I left Alabama a few months after graduation, to pursue my career in the healthcare IT world where I specialize in Marketing and working with a team to lead the implementation and optimization of electronic software for large, multi-facility, multi-national healthcare systems; Now that I’m back in Alabama, I service ambulatory clinics in the Birmingham area. My start in Healthcare IT began upon the completion of my college graduation. If I’m being honest, I’m not supposed to be an Analyst, I’m supposed to be a doctor or a nurse or even working for NASA. Life happens and I made a decision and that decision took me another route versus my original plan…Sometimes our plans will either go the way that we desire or take us a different route in which we didn’t expect; The unexpected is how I got to where I am today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
A smooth road? Life is never a smooth road! Working in my career, I have experienced a lot of ups and downs, in’s and out’s, joy and pain… again, I’m not even supposed to be in Healthcare IT. When I went off to school, I had high hopes to be a pediatrician, then I later changed my major to nursing. Let me tell you, Nursing was a complete fail as I got denied more than once to enter into a program. Just to elaborate, with me trying to be a nurse I forced myself to believe that it was the career path for me but eventually (running out of financial aid), I moved on and it also helped me to realize that I was being called to follow a different path so I switched my degree to Healthcare Management which ultimately led to my career in Healthcare IT.
I’ve always had a passion for healthcare and for people because I knew that I wanted to be apart of the change that I wanted to see in the healthcare industry, especially as it has a big impact on my people. I’ve had many struggles to get to where I am such as sleepless nights, internships, studying, preparing, working more than one job to make sure I stayed financially secure while I was going to school and that’s only half of what some of the struggles looked like for me; Let’s not even bring up what classes were like lol I won’t bring that negativity over this way. Furthermore, I will never attribute my success to having an easy path. I worked tirelessly to accomplish every goal that I set for myself but most importantly, I could never attribute my accomplishments to that of my own will or doing but it was and is by the Grace of God that I am where I am today and for that, God gets all the glory!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I wouldn’t say that I have a business just yet, but I do have ideas of things that I would like to do in the near future. But what I do have is something that I’m passionate about… my YouTube channel “YoursTrulyKeya” (SO PLEASE SUBSCRIBE I like to have a good time), I also write blogs and you can find those at “reallyrakeya.wordpress.com“. What sets me apart from others? Hmmm, that’s a good question, because I feel like who we are as a person sets us apart from one another. There will never be another Rakeya and there will never be another You. Walking in that and realizing who you are sets you apart because we were never called to be like anyone but ourselves. Was that deep? Lol, I like to hit you guys with a little razzle-dazzle but I’m sure if I had a legit business, I could probably name a few things. Again, check me out on YouTube!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Wheewww! I can attribute my success to so many people that I consider to be apart of my tribe. That’s God Himself, my family, my friends, and even strangers that I never had a close relationship with —who have stopped by in my life to give a word of encouragement, support, etc. I thank God daily for the people He has strategically placed in my life to help me get to where I need to be and how this worked was through prayer, friendship, accountability, reliability, support, love and sacrifice. I am what I am because of my tribe!
