Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Kuzma.
Rebecca, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I received my Master’s Degree in Wig and Makeup Design from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. I moved to New York City, where I worked on Broadway on Mamma Mia! Grey Gardens and four years on Disney’s The Lion King.
I spent eight great years in Los Angeles, where I worked doing all things makeup, including Film, Webisodes, Commercials, Music Videos, Headshots, Special Makeup Effects, Beauty, and Straight Makeup. Then recently (2019), I moved to Atlanta, GA, to be closer to family and am continuing my work and love for Makeup and artistic creation.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Moving to NYC and getting into Broadway was pretty smooth. I started as a swing on Mamma Mia! The Lion King and Grey Gardens. Then I kind of got lucky to be in the right place at the right time with the right skills and became full time on The Lion King. I spent four great years there.
When I moved to LA, it was not so smooth. I had to make all new connections in a world that was pretty new, but I met some great people and have worked on some very fun projects. Then I moved to Atlanta and had to start that whole process over, but with more knowledge. It’s still the same struggle of meet the “right” people, you know, who are hiring and get the gig. It’s been fun so far as I’ve met a lot of great photographers and done some day playing on TV shows.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I think my specialty is natural beauty makeup, though I do love to do FX makeup. I’m a proud Union member and I love meeting new people and working with new talent. I love collaboration.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think I would have kept up more with my FX work because it really is fun!
