Today we’d like to introduce you to Sededra Arthur.
Sededra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my business when I was sixteen years old. I told my mom that it was basically time for me to start my journey, which was for me to do things I loved instead of working someone else’s job for them, but of-course, telling her that wasn’t easy. My mom was a single mother at the time. So, of course, she was working a normal 9-5 for someone else. When I explained that I wanted to start a hair business, she was so excited, and I was very much confused as if why lol. My mom never mentioned anything about the entrepreneur or being your own boss so I didn’t expect her to react that way. After weeks of me and my mom looking at the pros and cons of being in the business industry, she finally considered about moving to the next step. Which was spending the money to start. This is the interesting part My mom took her whole income tax money to invest in my business. Yes, the whole thing! When my mom did that, I knew I had to give her that money back and times more. For me, that was motivation and support. I knew she believed in my vision because if she didn’t she wouldn’t have put her whole income tax towards my business.
When days and months went past, I knew that at my age, I had a mindset that I can say no child around my age at that time had. Making my own money was a passion for me, but doing something I enjoyed was the most part. I noticed that a lot of other brands was up charging their hair prices and not everyone could afford $500 worth of hair. What I did was, I began to write down goals I had for my business and different things others businesses weren’t doing that would make me stand out from everyone else. The number one thing was the prices I knew that would put me in a different field. I was a young entrepreneur who started a business at the age of sixteen. That made a huge impact because it made others realize that’s it did not matter how old, how young, where you are from to justify what you can do. I never knew that my business would be going on for two years! It has definitely felt like a lifetime. I have met many connections and mentors along the way. I have been in two Bronner bros shows which I had the opportunity to showcase my hair and also receive sponsorships from them. I wouldn’t say Im where I would like to be yet, but as moving forward, I will continue to help the people around me and support because I received nothing but that.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
During the pass two years of selling hair made me become a stronger person, and I say this because having a business for one is difficult. It’s all about learning people and having people skills. I still today sometimes struggle from that, because anything you do or say can jeopardize your brand. Selling hair is one of the most challenging things. It took me a while to find the right extensions to enhance my brand. During my journey, I went through lots of bad hair reviews and bashing about the hair. I could never understand why and how to stop it until I finally found a great supplier for my brand. For many months now, I have been receiving nothing but positivity. When you want your brand to prosper, you have to make sacrifices.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is named AddaBangXtensions. I wanted my name to pop and have a catchy slang to it. My business is to make other queens feel beautiful in any hair. It doesn’t matter about the price. The only thing that matters is the quality, and I’m positive my brand is definitely that. Women sometimes feel the need that if they spend 400+ dollars on hair, it will be the best of the best, but that’s not the case. That is why my brand is different from others. My brand is most known for having all my hair on hand. My customers truly appreciate the consistency I have when texting, calling and caring.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a dreamer. I always dreamed about what I would be like or what I would be doing later on in life. I remember when I was younger, I would feel out of place sometimes when hanging out with friends. I was never a follower, I always just did what I wanted to do. I loved listening to music. When I was younger, R&B was my favorite and it still is.
