Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaun Rose.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up in NYC, music literally surrounded every part of my life. My dad would play soca, calypso, and classic R&B on the weekends. We’d be jamming out to the sounds of Alison Hinds, Bob Marley, Beres Hammond, Rufus, Earth Wind & Fire, and Minnie Riperton non-stop. As weird as this might sound growing up I wasn’t really exposed to much modern R&B music.
From the age of three, I loved the feeling of being on stage. My Parents worked a lot so they would keep me busy in Dance lessons at Impressions Dance Theatre and Black Spectrum Theatre Camp, I would perform all across the city. Dance classes and camp introduced me to Jazz, Classical, Rock, Hip-Hop and Modern R&B; I was thirsty for the shit after that. The first time I ever sang in public was on the Long Island Railroad singing “I Believe I Could Fly” up and down the isles. Legit was my first paid gig! At that moment I knew I wanted to be a Star.
I started writing poems and letters to my friends in high school. One of my homegirls decided to sing one of my poems and was like “Bitch this a whole ass song!” Even though I went to high school for singing I never really tried to sing anything I wrote. That shit put a battery in my back! We’d be singing songs in Italian and German in class, and my ass would be in the front row of women’s Ensemble remixing all that shit.
I ain’t start taking music serious till I went to Atlanta for college. Being on Clark Atlanta University Campus, I was like “I could really do this!” I put out my first project “Petals to the Rose an Audio Diary” in February 2013, and people really fell in love with it. DJ Gregg St. put me on his Gregg St. University Mixtape and broke my song “Luv Me” on the radio for the first time on V-103. Shorty was geeked for real!
I used to be ashamed of not knowing a lot of modern R&B music growing up, but I feel like not knowing really ended up helping me more than ever. I’ve been able to dabble in so many genres of music; I’m glad I can be so free musically to write damn near anything.
Has it been a smooth road?
Na, it definitely hasn’t been easy. Last year I found out I had a polyp on my vocal chords. And that was probably the most devastating thing that has ever happened to me.
A polyp is every singer’s worst nightmare. Some people can never sing the same after getting a getting one. I had to change up so much of my lifestyle. I went M.I.A for a couple of months just to get my voice back to health. But I’ve grown to accept what has happened to me and I’ve found new ways to use my voice.
Honestly, I know God got me so ain’t no such thing as a set back to what’s already been aligned for my life. I don’t even trip off the imperfections in my voice that I was taught was incorrect in school. No note can be incorrect if you feel it when you sing it.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Most people know me as a singer and performer, but recently I’ve been dabbling in choreography and film production. I’ve been honored to work with T.I., The Migos, Young Thug, Tyler Perry and choreograph for Kelechi and Blac Youngsta.
I’ve directed my latest Music Video “Riding Shotgun,” and I do look forward to creative directing on more projects. I’m most proud of myself for taking a leap of faith and leaving NYC to come to Atlanta. I’m not sure what my life would be like right now if I didn’t step out of my comfort zone.
It is really wild when I look back at old videos of myself and see my growth as an artist. I used to be super hard and crucial to my work. I’ve learned to lighten up and appreciate each moment I get to hit the stage instead of overthinking and analyzing myself. Sometimes I still do, but I’m working on it.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Atlanta shows me so much love. From the drop of my first single “Daylight,” I’ve had endless support every time I perform. I do wish there were more platforms for R&B artist and eclectic artist across the city. Sheeeeed I’ma make my own shit!

I’m proud of you Gianna (Shaun Rose). You started dancing with me from the tender age of three until high school and you had the star quality in you since then, that’s why you were lead dancer, performing several solo pieces, then you went to college in Atlanta and every year you came back to perform in my Recitals (Impressions Dance Theatre) but not as a Dancer but as a Singer, now you’re choreographing, you have been indefatigable and disciplined and it has paid off, congratulations Gianna, the sky’s the limit.
