Today we’d like to introduce you to Shenneka Nwachukwu.
Shenneka, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started thrifting around 2008- 2009 in college at the University of Kentucky. I would find very unique outfits and cool pieces of clothing while hiking in remote towns.
Once graduating from college, I continued my hobby for thrifting and brought my ability to find cool and interesting outfits into corporate America. I discovered I had an eye for great finds based on my manager’s and co-workers reactions to my outfits.
I would sell them my outfits, coats, handbags, etc… after this, becoming a more frequent interaction, I formally started MariettaThriftier in 2015.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road of an entrepreneur is never smooth. My belief is if your entrepreneurship journey is too smooth your missing something vital to your business; bumps in road builds up resistance and resilience. In my personal experience, I struggled to understand my demographic and where to market. Also, I had to spread my efforts too far on to many sites where I couldn’t keep up and didn’t know how people were viewing my products. Once I realized that my original efforts were not growing my business, I focused on two sites for Pinterest and Etsy. This allowed me to learned to focus on one thing at a time I saw a significant spike in views and purchases.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Marietta Thriftier story. Tell us more about the business.
MariettaThriftier is an online consignment shop. We specialize in handbags but sell additional accessories from shoe, home items, picnic baskets, and vintage cameras.
What sets Marietta Thriftier apart?
The items you will find on the site. I try to ensure that I have a wide variety of handbags.
I believe that you can tell a lot about a person’s style and personality based upon their handbags. It is the most significant non-verbal statement on a woman.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t really believe in luck. I think God watches your efforts and blesses you with your heart’s desire once you’ve done the work and proven you can handle the small things. This applies to both my business life and personal life.
