Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Wyatt.
Hi Taylor, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory
I started my tutoring business “Miss Tay’s Tutoring” back in 2019. My business specializes in working with students K-5 with subjects: math, science, and reading. Growing up, I was never certain about what I wanted to do, up until my freshman year of college. I began interning at an elementary school in Gwinnett County, where I worked with 5th-grade students. There was one student there in particular, who didn’t care about school that much; he didn’t have a positive home life either. His teacher gave up on him, but something in my heart told me to break him out of his shell. After having patience and making his interests my interests, his grades and his confidence have increased dramatically.
On the last day of my internship, I told him how proud of him I was, and tears from him and I began to fall. I later surprised him at his elementary graduation and his mother hugged me in the tightest way possible, cried, and stated, “Thank you so much for being a huge inspiration in my son’s life. He’s better at math and science, and his reading level has increased by four letters (levels). I didn’t know he was depressed until he told me that you had cured it for him. He is now happier than ever. Thank you, Ms. Wyatt!” If I knew that my lessons, counseling sessions, and my personality can change one child’s life, I know that I can impact MANY others. This is when I knew that teaching was my calling. I just graduated from Georgia Gwinnett College back in May 2020, and now I am a 5th-grade teacher in Gwinnett County Schools. I plan to go back to school to obtain my Master’s, Specialists, and hopefully, my Doctorate’s and later become an Assistant Principal or Principal. I also want to build and open an elementary school for low-income families.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I started my business back in 2019, when I took some time away from school. It was hard at first trying to build clientele, but I knew that I had to crawl before I walked. During this time, I was working three jobs: being a manager at a wing spot, working at Wal-mart, and working at a warehouse. Even though working all of those jobs were a lot, I needed to find something less tiring so I didn’t have to work so excessively. Then I remembered that I am Majoring in Elementary Education and that I can tutor children. I looked online and found a website to create business cards.
Once my order came in, I attached my business cards to my customers’ receipts at the wing place. I also posted on Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. My clientele began to rise, and I started with tutoring only one student to five, and then 15 students at once. When I returned to school to finish up my senior year, I had to slow down due to the heavy schoolwork load. I lost a lot of clientele, but I didn’t give up. When COVID-19 in March started to escalate, my clientele started to increase again due to the early shutdowns of school. Today, I only have a handful of students to tutor. Hopefully, it will increase soon since we are halfway through the school year. It hasn’t been a smooth road like I planned, but with the high amount of faith that I have I know for certain that my business will suffer fourish soon.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently a 5th-grade teacher in Gwinnett County Schools. This my first year as a teacher, as I graduated from Georgia Gwinnett College in May 2020. I am most proud of my accomplishments thus far in life. I am one of the only college graduates in my family and work in my career field. I had a strong support system from my closest friends, my mom, my brother, and other family members. As much as I wanted to give up, I knew that I wanted my future to be bright, and giving up was going to prove my haters and non-believers right, I had one of my professors told me that she felt as if I wasn’t “culturally relevant enough to be a teacher” and that my class cohort was the “dumbest class that she’s ever had”. I felt discouraged but later laughed because her words did not define the person that I am, nor going to mold me to become the failure she wants me to be.
One of my biggest strengths is that I am highly creative. I love to dance, sing, and perform any form of art. Since elementary school, when it comes to projects or presentations, I always incorporate some type of song and or dance. Some of my former students/parents still come to me until this day singing the song or dancing the choreography that I taught them years ago. I had a project for one of my education courses at GGC, where I created a music video that fives examples of formative assessments to use in the classroom. With my current students, I teach them small songs and dances that can help them remember science terms and math formulas. Some of my professors tell me that they show their current students the video to use as a guide. It is an honor to have the ability to express my creativity to children and adults so they gain the experience of learning something in a different way.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I have a strong connection with some of my former professors and classmates from GGC. While we work in Gwinnett County Schools or surrounding counties, we keep in close contact to discuss our experience of the week and some ways that we can improve each other’s teachings, experiences. etc. I also grew up at my church, Saint Philip AME Church in Atlanta, where there are a handful of members that were former and current educators. I ask them for guidance to help me become a better educator and an individual. The support and love that I receive from my colleagues, friends, classmates, church members, family, etc is phenomenal, and I am truly blessed to have them in my life.
